Every now and then, there will be a post about unboxing an anime and eventually, they will get dragged deep into the blog’s older pages. So now, this page will cover all of the un-boxing anime posts created. Note that most of the unboxing posts will most likely be directed towards anime fans in the Region B areas; United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia.
Each title, whenever possible, will also include links to Amazon UK where you can view the listing and pick it up if you wish. Please note that these links are all under the Affiliate program which will support me for any future hauls whenever possible.
Some key notes in the technical details:
DVDs are presented in Standard Definition at either PAL or NTSC format. NTSC format is the video codec most common in Japan, the United States & Asia, while the PAL format is the video codec most common in the United Kingdom, Europe & Australia.
Blu-rays are presented in High Definition at 1080p or 1080i depending on the transfer. The discs similar to DVD can even have varying aspect ratios; 4:3 (1.33:1, or anamorphic 16:9), 16:9 (1.78:1), and widescreen (2.35:1) ratio. Blu-ray is also notable for supporting SD quality, which is how the concept of ‘Standard Definition on Blu-ray (SD-BD)’ can exist.
SD-BDs sounds like a pointless venture, but it does have its own mini benefits like better audio, better readable subtitles and include more than the average amount of episodes and extras on less discs without losing any quality. For example, Fist of the North Star by Discotek Media is 152 episodes and had 21 DVD discs in total which takes up a lot of space on the shelf. The SD-BD version is 3 Blu-ray discs and had everything intact including improved subtitles and saving users tons of space on the shelf.
In recent years we now have 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, which is presented in Ultra High Definition with 2160p. Apparently the 4K UHD discs won’t support 720p or below according to Discotek, so expect a lot of releases in anime to be a combo pack of some sort to secure the on-disc bonus features or somehow have the SD quality & 720p presentation upscaled to 1080p if possible.
Many anime (and films in general) are not always presented with a HD native remaster. In this instance it would be described as an upscale. While I am not an expert in video quality, a lot of anime can receive mixed results caused by extensive DNR, loss of grain and smeary presentation caused by various factors. While having a clean picture is always nice, sometimes grain is integral to ensure the art or look of the presentation is fully intact.
Blu-ray Disc Regions:
- Region A: Playable in Japan, the US, Canada & Asia.
- Region B: Playable in the UK, Europe & Australia, New Zealand.
- Region C: Playable outside of the EU, US & Asia territories.
DVD Disc Regions:
- Region 1: Playable in the US & Canada.
- Region 2: Playable in the UK, Europe and Japan.
- Region 4: Playable in Australia and New Zealand.
