Restaurant to Another World Season 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Restaurant to Another World (異世界食堂, Isekai Shokudō) Season 2 is a 2021 television anime series based on Junpei Inuzuka’s light novel series of the same name. The second season was produced by studio OLM, and the staff credits include director and screenplay writer Masato Jinbo, character designer Yasukazu Shoji and music composed by Miho Tsujibayashi & TOMISIRO. The season was first aired in Japan on October 2021.

Background:

“Western Restaurant Nekoya continues to serve more of your favorite otherworldly stories and mouthwatering dishes. Pull up a chair next to returning regulars and new patrons. If you’re lucky enough, that magical door might just change your life!”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll, May 2023.

Before the dozens of Isekai shows started to emerge in recent years, the isekai shows back in the mid-10s were mainly action or comedy focused with a big emphasis on overpowered characters or serious themes throughout. Those included the likes of Konosuba, No Game No Life, OVERLORD and Re:ZERO taking the spotlight. But along the way you do get some series which do have Isekai tropes but went under the radar and one of those was a little series called Restaurant to Another World.

The series is all about a restaurant that provides food for characters from another world and it’s honestly one that I had overlooked all of these years. When the Funimation catalogue started to slowly discontinue on their home video releases is when I looked into the series more (and there was also the light novels but Seven Seas didn’t bother to reprint the first volume), but what’s really interesting about the franchise is that it managed to get a second season almost half a decade later. The first season, animated by studio Silver Link, aired in July 2017 and the second season came four years later by the same team behind the original series ODD TAXI. Second seasons are pretty rare unless the series was so popular or planned beforehand in a split-cour style format, so it was cool to see a series like this get the treatment.

Restaurant to Another World was licensed in the west by Crunchyroll and was one of many that were sub-licensed and dubbed into English by Funimation. The second season was among the last to be dubbed under the Funimation name before the distributor rebranded under Crunchyroll when Sony bought them. The series is too niche for the UK so I had to import the release from North America.

Limited Edition Contents:

Restaurant to Another World Season 2 is a rather interesting choice to receive the limited edition format, considering the show’s nicheness, so credit to Crunchyroll for offering one and going all out on the physical package.

The package is presented as a rigid box that uses a different texture to your regular sets. Inside the box is an Amaray case with a slipcase to house the discs. Also included with the set is a 64-page art book, and a cardboard box that includes 3 official recipe cards. The cardboard box you can also swap out with either the regular or Essentials Blu-ray release of the show’s first season (and there’s enough room to house those cards as well). The booklet features character designs, interviews with the staff and voice actors, and food designs.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll limited edition releases. The SRP for the limited-edition set was $84.98 and there’s no exact unit count. I ordered my copy through Rightstuf for $57.37 plus postage. A standard edition Blu-ray & DVD combo release was also released on the same day as this edition.
