PROMARE is a 2019 theatrical anime film directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi, animated by studios Trigger and XFLAG, and published by TOHO Animation. This is also studio Trigger’s first theatrical anime project.
Background:
“”Burnish” – a sudden mutation responsible for a vast number of cases of human combustion across the globe, which brings fear and anger to humanity in equal measure. In the wake of attempts to segregate the populace and maintain order, a radical group is born: the Mad Burnish, who seek to escape their oppression and impose themselves upon the world in an unprecedented explosion of terrorist activity.
Thirty years on from the Great World Blaze which resulted from these atrocities, it’s left to an anti-Burnish firefighting group known as Burning Rescue to maintain peace and order. With Galo Thymos at its forefront, can his burning passion for justice extinguish the nefarious deeds of Mad Burnish leader Lio Fotia? Either way, the resulting clash will prove the catalyst for sparks which ignite unexpected truths at the heart of a world whose very survival hangs in the balance.”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, June 2020
PROMARE was announced a few years ago during Trigger’s panel at Anime Expo 2017, which revealed other titles like DARLING in the FRANXX and SSSS.GRIDMAN. I was quite concerned about PROMARE given the early concepts, but after watching the film at the cinema, I really enjoyed it and I feel it’s one of Trigger’s best works.
The film was released theatrically in May 2019 for Japanese theaters but had also received theatrical screens outside Japan such as the United States and Australia in September 2019 followed by the United Kingdom in October/November 2019. GKIDS acquired the theatrical and home video rights for the United States and Canada with an English dub produced by NYAV Post and features well-known VAs including Billy Kametz (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable), Johnny Yong Bosch (Bleach), Crispin Freeman (Hellsing), Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop), Matt Mercer (Attack on Titan) and Yuri Lowenthal (Code Geass). Anime Limited acquired the same rights for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Collector’s Edition Contents:
Anime Limited offers the traditional method for their theatrical films; a standard edition and a collector’s edition release. In an interesting turn of events, PROMARE‘s collector’s edition is Blu-ray only rather than a combo pack as they were able to acquire the rights to the film’s original soundtrack CD composed by Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan, Kill la Kill), which is available standalone in Japan if you can’t afford this release. In addition, the collector’s edition Blu-ray will also be brought over to the United States under GKIDS with the exact same packaging and disc content.
The collector’s edition release includes the original soundtrack CD (as mentioned), a 52-page booklet with character profiles and interviews with the staff, a 128-page script of the film which TRIGGER were involved with adapting in English, a folded 30x45cm poster, and a PROME POLIS decal sticker.
