Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is a 2013 television anime series based on the manga of the same name written by Hajime Isayama. It was adapted by WIT Studio and directed by Tetsurō Araki and Masashi Koizuka. Kodansha published the series and was first broadcast in Japan on April 2013 as part of the Spring season.
The show’s second season was first broadcast in Japan on April 2017.
Note: This blog post will contain photos that feature massive spoilers for the events of the second season. Just a heads up!

Plot Synopsis via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Funimation, February 2018
Attack on Titan blew up like a storm when its first season aired in Japan back in 2013 and is still popular to an extent. Eventually as years started to pass, it slowly started to die down. It’s a series that can put people off with its concept and while the first season gathered a number of new anime fans around the world, evidently the franchise needed to keep going if its wants to maintain that momentum.
The problem however, was that when the first season finished airing there was only enough manga content to just produce a second season. Therefore a spin-off anime adaptation was made, Attack on Titan: Junior High, as well as a bunch of individual OVAs that came with the manga volumes to keep the anime fans entertaining in the meantime.
Eventually, the second season finally emerged and slowly bit by bit the popularity started to come back, with its third season in my opinion properly getting it back to the hype levels of the first season. The second season of Attack on Titan follows not long after the events of the first season, with its own twists and turns for both the story and characters. It’s a season that might divide viewers, but not as much as the later seasons.
Funimation has the rights to Attack on Titan for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland. They provided an English dub which aired on Toonami in the United States and eventually for home video. Crunchyroll was still able to stream the series but Funimation are the main rights holder for the English speaking territories. The series in the UK started out pretty rough, with Manga Entertainment cheapening out (and at one point lying to their fans about the on-disc content) with the release of the first season.
For the second season, Attack on Titan was being handled by Sony Pictures on behalf of Funimation and that distribution was more or less short-lived as the years go by. Manga Entertainment will eventually re-release the season in the future though at the moment they’re just re-using the current stock left from Sony Pictures.
Limited Edition Contents:
Despite being distributed by Sony Pictures, we have a pretty rare case on our hands for Attack on Titan. Because the series is popular in the UK, Funimation and Sony Pictures were able to bring the US limited edition set over in an almost identical release, with the main difference being that the BBFC ratings are on the disc and the DVDs are encoded in the PAL format.
The main difference between Manga’s take on their first season “collector’s edition” and the Funimation limited edition is the rigid outer box and its use of a digibook style package. The digibook idea was rather daft but with the addition of an outer box it helps protect the set. The outer box will also match owners who own the first season’s Ender Box variant of the Season 1 Part 2 limited edition North American release (which is region locked to A/1 for those curious).
Inside the digibook we have the Blu-ray discs on one side and the DVD discs on another, with the middle containing a 24-page booklet called “Notes from Beyond the Wall: Part III”. What makes this set stand out more from the first season’s limited edition releases is that it also comes with another physical item, this time a 60-page artbook.
The artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Funimation releases. The limited edition Blu-ray & DVD set has an unspecified amount of units printed for an SRP of £69.99. The limited edition took probably years to sell out and I acquired mine through Amazon via a Prime Day deal on the set after it was made available across different retailers after being initially exclusive to Zavvi (which was a very dumb move).
