Brief Unboxing Redux Note:
I first acquired Gundam: Reconguista in G in November 2016 at MCM Birmingham Comic Con via Anime Limited’s booth. This was unboxed over on my Normanic Vault blog via Blogger. This post is a remaster of that unboxing with better photos, updated information and any added extras. Plus, this post was further updated on December 2023 to reflect the current blog design. Enjoy!
Background:
“The Universal Century, an era of historic migration into space and space wars has ended, and some time has passed. It’s now Regild Century Year 1014 (R.C. 1014) where the creation of humanoid mobile suits of war is now taboo and Earth is connected to space via the sacred orbital elevator, Capital Tower, which humanity uses to bring energy in the form of Photon Batteries to the surface.
Bellri Zenam is a cadet in the Capital Guard, the protectors of the tower. During a training exercise pirates attack the tower and Bellri crosses paths with the G-Self, a mobile suit with unknown technology. Bellri is successful in capturing the suit and it’s pilot, Aiida Reihanton, and soon discovers the G-Self, which should only be operable under certain conditions, will now move under his own hand. Now Bellri must pilot the G-Self to uncover the mysteries behind the space pirates, the G-Self and his own destiny. These truths will shake the entire Regild Century to it’s core and this is just the beginning of Reconguista?”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, November 2016.
The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise has had a lot of iconic instalments, and many still have fond memories for the original trio that are part of the Universal Century timeline. Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on those and eventually took a break with 1999’s Turn-A Gundam which is considered to be among one of the favourites in the franchise.
About 15 years later, Yoshiyuki Tomino returns with his next directed work on a Gundam project with Gundam: Reconguista in G, alongside character designer Kenichi Yoshida who many will recognise for their work on the Eureka Seven franchise, but the two have collaborated before at Sunrise back in 2002 with Overman King Gainer.
Gundam: Reconguista in G is also an oddity in the franchise. It takes place in the Regild Century timeline, but is apparently about 1014 years after the end of the Universal Century (where the original Mobile Suit Gundam took place), though since then, there are debates on whether or not it’s the same timeline or not.
So in case you haven’t heard already, Gundam: Reconguista in G is one of the least liked titles in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and apparently Tomino decided it was a brilliant idea to create a movie compilation on the television series that offers a new conclusion. So far at the time of this write-up, only the first film has been released as of late in Japanese theaters.
Anime Limited licensed Gundam: Reconguista in G as a separate license from their partnership deal with Sunrise on the franchise that they have for the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. They did keep consistency with the home video packaging on the other hand. As this was one of their earlier titles, the series streamed on Vimeo at one point with a download option. Regardless the series did get released for home video on Blu-ray by the distributor, with the Nozomi & Rightstuf handling the US & Canada license.
Collector’s Edition Contents:
As mentioned, Gundam: Reconguista in G was separate from the Gundam franchise partnership with Sunrise, but they still kept the design consistent with the Gundam Collection logo on the spine. The difference here is that they have artwork covering all sides of the box which works really well.
The package is presented as a rigid box with two Amaray cases to keep consistency with the size of the previous Mobile Suit Gundam release that came prior, though they ditched this idea when more Gundams were released that were shorter in length i.e. one film or one-cour’s worth of content. Also included with the set are 9 Art Cards.
The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has 1000 units printed for an SRP of £59.99. A standard edition Blu-ray did eventually follow suit as the collector’s edition eventually sold out.
