Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 (進撃の巨人 The Final Season Part 2, Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season Part 2) is a 2022 television anime series based on Hajime Isayama’s manga series Attack on Titan. The second cour of the show’s final season was produced by studio MAPPA, and the staff credits include director Yuichiro Hayashi, screenplay writer Hiroshi Seko, character designer Tomohiro Kishi and music composer Kohta Yamamoto. The second cour was first aired in Japan on January 2022.

This is the fourth season of Attack on Titan, so any images and details mentioned below will be considered as major spoilers for those who have yet to watch or read any of the story aspects covered in Seasons 1 to 3.

Background:

“Just as the Jaegerists seize control, Marley launches their counter attack. Now shouldering the sins of the past, Eren enacts his true plan to protect Paradis. But what will remain in his wake? The line between right and wrong blurs in the fog of war.”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll UK, May 2023.

Attack on Titan is one of the most popular anime of the past decade. Even despite a few years gap between the first two seasons, the series still managed to get new attention and with its latest episodes also continues to temporarily cause server issues for streaming platforms due to high demand.

Now we are in its fourth season, which is now known as Attack on Titan: The Final Season, which basically takes a different direction to what you would know from the first three seasons with different characters, different perspectives and more insane twists to come as we approach the endgame. In addition, studio MAPPA (Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, Jujutsu Kaisen) took over from WIT Studio for animating the fourth season.

The series continues to entertain me with its storyline and characters as we see the direction spiral into insanity, and it’s incredible that a character who was full of rage against the Titans in the first episode is now a completely different person with new goals and attitudes towards everything that has happened, even if it leads to him essentially taking on a rather darker path. Animation and artstyle I actually prefer MAPPA’s over WIT’s take, but both are still good for different reasons.

Despite the subtitle, Attack on Titan: The Final Season was split into parts. Originally we assumed it would be two, but it’s now three parts because to the studio taking their time with the adaptation. For Part 1, we saw they adapted Volumes 23 to half of Volume 29 (chapters 91 to 116). In Part 2, it adapts the second half of Volume 29 and stops at the end of Volume 32 (chapters 117 to 130). Part 3, known as The Final Chapters, was split into two television specials at one hour length, with one released covering the events of Volume 33 and another planned to sort out the rest later in the year.

Like the first three seasons, Funimation acquired the streaming and home video rights for Attack on Titan: The Final Season with simulcasts and a Toonami broadcast. This is also one of the last titles to be dubbed under the Funimation name before the company rebranded as Crunchyroll. While Part 1 was under Funimation’s name, Part 2 is now under the Crunchyroll name.

Limited Edition Contents:

As this is the second part for Attack on Titan: The Final Season, there’s going to be consistency with the first part. Now you may have noticed there’s no sign of any ender box that houses the digibooks, and that’s because the season isn’t done yet so we’ll be waiting a little while longer.

The limited edition release is presented as a digibook packaging with the Blu-ray and DVD discs housed on each side of the set. In-between the discs is the 24-page booklet called Notes Beyond the Walls Part VII which includes some chibi comics and storyboard designs.

Also included with the set is a separate cardboard filler box that houses the Enamel Pin set and 4 Art Cards.

The artwork is free of any information and the info sheet that wraps the set covers the information and specification like previous Funimation UK limited edition releases have been doing. Unit count wasn’t specified for this release, while the SRP was £99.99. A standard edition Blu-ray & DVD was also available on the same day as the limited edition release. I pre-ordered the set over on United Publications for £69.99 plus postage.

Part 3 aka The Final Chapters will also get a limited edition, however there’s an even larger gap due to the final chapter being split into two instalments (I know this is ridiculous at this point) so expect the final conclusion to be released on home video for the US & UK around early 2024 at the minimum.
