The House of the Lost on the Cape (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

The House of the Lost on the Cape (岬のマヨイガ, Misaki no Mayoiga) is a 2021 theatrical anime film based on Sachiko Kashiwaba’s novel of the same name. The adaptation is directed by Shinya Kawatsura and produced by studio David Production. Staff credits also include writer Reiko Yoshida, character designer Hiroshi Shimizu, and music composed by Yuri Miyauchi. The film was first released in Japanese theaters in August 2021.

Background:

“17-year-old run-away Yui and 8-year-old Hiyori, who lost her family and her voice, have no place to go when they run into Kiwa, a strange old lady. She offers them a place to stay, in a slightly banged-up old house overlooking the sea, a Mayoiga.

Despite joining Kiwa on a whim, the two girls find comfort in the Mayoiga, a legendary house said to look after lost travelers, and the warm hospitality of Kiwa. Both girls’ damaged hearts begin to heal little by little as time passes.

Until one day, a variety of strange beings which Kiwa calls “Fushigitto” begin popping up around the house…”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, June 2023.

Over ten years ago, Japan suffered the Tohoku earthquake which caused devastating damage to the country, affecting many people’s lives ever since. Anime at that time was also impacted with delays to broadcasts, but the community understood why and waited patiently for their favourite shows to finish. In terms of anime actually covering the earthquake, Pigtails was one that I remember having similar themes, but other than that both Japan Sinks 2020 and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 are worth a watch despite having no relation to the disaster.

In 2021, Japan celebrated the 10 year anniversary with Zutto Ōen Project 2011 + 10… which featured some projects and one of those was an anime adaptation of a novel written by Sachiko Kashiwaba. The House of the Lost on the Cape is noted as a light-hearted film and was animated by David Productions, known for their work on the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise as well as Fire Force so their work on television especially with the animation would translate well for theatrical films. Also noteworthy is Reiko Yoshida who is credited for a lot of anime projects including The Heike Story and Liz and the Blue Bird, and she wrote the screenplay for this film as well which adds more confidence to how it will turn out.

Eleven Arts were the first to license the film for an English territory, that being the United States and Canada and then Shout! Factory distributed on their behalf. This was then followed by Anime Limited licensing the film for the United Kingdom and Ireland, with its first appearance taking part at the Japan Foundation Touring Programme film festival in 2022. Considering how the film was adapted, and the staff involved, it was a good pick for Anime Limited to add to their catalog.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited continues their tradition of providing collector’s editions for their films, assuming there’s enough material available that is. The House of the Lost on the Cape receives the same style that The Deer King and Looking for Magical Doremi recently did with the added slipcase.

The package is presented as a rigid box with a slipcase housing a Amaray case that includes the Blu-ray disc. The listings did mention it would be a combo pack but it looks like they ditched the DVD at the last second. Also included with the set is a 24-page booklet, which features interviews, character artwork, and background information about the film.

The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray set is limited to 1000 units for SRP £39.99. A standard Blu-ray is planned to be released a few months after the release of this edition.

I pre-ordered my copy through Anime Limited’s store during their early bird sale at £24.99 but using their membership discount for £22.49.
