OVERLORD IV (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

OVERLORD IV (オーバーロード IV) is a 2022 television anime series based on Kugane Maruyama’s light novel series of the same name with illustrator so-bin. The series was produced by studio Madhouse, and the staff credits include director Naoyuki Itou, screenplay writer Yukie Sugawara, character designer Satoshi Tasaki and music composer Shūji Katayama. The season was first aired in Japan in July 2022.

Background:

“Newly crowned Ains plans his utopia, but before he can reform the rival kingdoms, he’ll have to rule them. His terrifying nature makes allies hard to come by, but when the Dwarven Kingdom is threatened, Ains finally has a chance to prove his good intentions.”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll, October 2023.

I am amazed that the OVERLORD franchise has continued to receive more adaptations at this point, especially coming from Madhouse who don’t always stick to multiple seasons. But I personally enjoyed watching all of OVERLORD so far even if the story can be a bit muddled at time which is likely caused by the anime having to make cuts here and there to make the runtime. In fact OVERLORD IV is an interesting one because a story arc was actually skipped because it’s going to be getting its own theatrical version at some point due to the tone which is apparently a bit risky for broadcast (basically it may require a lot of censoring from what I heard).

OVERLORD IV to my knowledge covers Novels 10, 11, 14 & 15 (with the skipped arc covering Novels 12 & 13) so there’s not that many left before the series is fully adapted. I think what Madhouse has done so far is very good, with some animation issues here and there but the rest was well done.

Funimation over the years were the main licensors for the previous seasons but Crunchyroll this time takes over for OVERLORD IV onwards. Now I don’t believe they have the license for the upcoming film adaptation so for now we’re left with this season as well as the compilation films that are still stuck on streaming only. Anime Limited released the first season in the UK on behalf of Funimation, and then Manga Entertainment took over the license going forward with Crunchyroll UK now doing the same for OVERLORD IV. However, much like the third season, the limited edition release is only available in the US and Australian regions.

Limited Edition Contents:

We are now four seasons into the franchise and Crunchyroll manages to continue the consistency of providing a limited edition for the series on home video.

The limited edition box set features a rigid box that houses an Amaray case as well as an 40-page booklet and a spare cardboard box that includes 5 art cards and a fabric poster. The limited edition has exclusive artwork that differs from the standard edition for the main Amaray case. The artbook offers character designs, background artwork, and interviews with the cast.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll limited edition releases. The SRP for the limited-edition set was $94.98 and there’s no exact unit count.

I ordered the limited edition from Rightstuf alongside The Eminence in Shadow back in late July during the final days of the Birthday sale that provided a discount code, with the assistance of GotAnime membership for 10% discount. A standard edition Blu-ray release was also released on the same day as this edition.
