Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- (ヴィヴィ -フローライトアイズソング-) is a 2021 original television anime series directed by Shinpei Ezaki, created by Tappei Nagatsuki & Eiji Umehara, and produced by WIT Studio. Staff credits include screenplay writers Tappei Nagatsuki & Eiji Umehara, original character designer loundraw & adapted character designer Yūichi Takahashi, and music composer Satoru Kousaki. The series first aired in Japan in April 2021.

Background:

“NiaLand is an AI theme park that blends dreams with hope and science. Vivy was created as the world’s first autonomous humanoid AI to work as a cast member in the theme park. She gets on stage every day to sing, but she is not very popular.

“I want my singing to bring happiness to everyone.”

Vivy continues singing in hopes of achieving her goal of bringing her heartfelt performances to the theme park’s main stage.

One day, an AI that calls himself Matsumoto appears to her. Matsumoto claims that he is an AI from one hundred years in the future and that his mission is to rewrite history with Vivy in order to stop the war between AI and humans that will happen a century later.

How will the meeting of these two AIs with such different missions change the course of the future?

This is a story of I(Vivi) destroying I(AI)…””

Plot Synopsis via Aniplex of America, September 2022.

Hearing about Vivy is interesting because it has two major members involved in the project. Firstly we have Tappei Nagatsuki who may not look familiar by name, but when you view through their back catalogue you’ll eventually discover they are the creator of the very popular isekai series Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-, which has a very solid story throughout. Tappei also worked on another original anime series with Aniplex called Warlords of Sigrdrifa and is currently working with DC and Warner Bros for Suicide Squad Isekai alongside Eiji Umehara so they have an interesting track record so far.

Then you have WIT Studio who are already known for their work on adapting Attack on Titan for three seasons, but have also worked on a number of various projects from adapting The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Vinland Saga all the way to their own original projects like Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress and Great Pretender. Now I didn’t watch Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- during simulcast but I was aware of how its popularity eventually grew as each episode had aired and eventually it was considered by many to be one of the best anime shows of 2021, which is pretty impressive especially for an original project.

What I also found interesting, especially given the topic at hand that has been very common throughout the year, is that the show puts a focus on AI a fair bit, and from what I have been told it’s also got elements that are probably inspired by the Terminator given its premise. But hopefully the show lives to the hype from these past few years.

Aniplex of America licensed Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song- for streaming and home video, with its simulcast launched exclusively on Funimation before eventually carrying over onto Crunchyroll when Sony bought the latter. The series was also dubbed during simulcast and since it did well, Aniplex eventually made it available for Blu-ray. Much like the recent Aniplex shows and films, the series has yet to be released in the United Kingdom for whatever reason.
