ARIFURETA: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (ありふれた職業で世界最強Arifureta Shokugyō de Sekai Saikyō) Season 2 is a 2022 television anime series based on Ryo Shirakome’s light novel of the same name. The television series is directed by Akira Iwanaga and produced by studios Asread and Mother. Staff credits also include writer Shoichi Sato and music composed by Ryō Takahashi. The second season of the series first aired in Japan on January 2022.

Background:

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll, March 2023.

ARIFURETA is one of those isekai stories that I really enjoyed reading. It was thanks to the first episode of the very messy anime adaptation that what got me into reading the light novels. The anime wasn’t perfect but there were some aspects that I enjoyed, though it still rushed through four volumes of content in 13 episodes. It also didn’t help that production issues were also part of the issue.

Which is why it was a shock for everyone that it got a second season, this time studio Asread took over completely whilst replacing studio White Fox with studio Mother. White Fox is known for a lot of solid anime adaptations so it’s still a shock that they missed the mark a lot with this one, even if Asread were leading this one in the end.

That said, whilst I did not watch ARIFURETA Season 2 during simulcast as I wanted to read more of the light novel volumes first, apparently it turned out to be better than expected because it only covered Volumes 5 & 6 of the source material which is a much better pace than before, so I give props to studio Asread for listening to its criticisms and slowing down the pace. Though the damage has already been done with Season 1, even if they did release a new prologue to fill some gaps but that’s not enough to make up for it.

Funimation acquired the streaming and home video rights for ARIFURETA Season 2 just before the Crunchyroll rebranding began. The series will be distributed by Crunchyroll’s UK branch but the limited edition will not be brought over.

Limited Edition Contents:

Crunchyroll as of late have started to be more picky with their limited edition releases, but ARIFURETA must have been popular enough during simulcast to have another for this season.

The limited-edition box set features a rigid box that houses an Amaray case (with a slipcase) as well as a 80-page book. There’s also a cardboard box outside of the box set that features 6 art cards, and 3 vinyl stickers. The artwork on the box is positioned vertically like any other release, rather than the horizontal approach of the previous season. The booklet includes character designs, prop designs, and background designs.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll limited edition releases.

The SRP for the limited-edition set was $84.98 and there’s no exact unit count. I pre-ordered the limited-edition release from Rightstuf, with the assistance of GotAnime membership and a discount code to lower the costs. The set was ordered alongside Mieruko-chan so with the two together was cheaper than United Publications in today’s exchange rate. A standard edition Blu-ray & DVD release is also available.

Physical Contents:

  • Rigid Box with Amaray packaging and clean artwork
  • Info sheet for specification
  • 80-page Booklet

The limited edition release for ARIFURETA: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest Season 2 contains all 12 episodes as well as three OVAs (one full-length, two half-length episodes) across two Blu-ray discs and two DVD discs, with the encode and authoring done by Crunchyroll.

Audio options include Japanese audio with English subtitles and the Funimation English dub. The white subtitles are locked during Blu-ray playback of the Japanese audio track (but will be unlockable for the English dub), and the disc regions are playable on A & B for Blu-ray, and 1, 2 & 4 for DVD in NTSC format, which is interesting considering the first season was region locked.

Worth noting that if you want to play the two-part OVA specials in Japanese audio (as it defaults to the English dub), you’ll need to update the audio settings in the disc menu before playing it because the pop-up menu is locked to just the menu option only.
