Lupin the Third Part 6 (ルパン三世 PART6, Lupin Sansei Part 6) is a 2021 television anime series based on Monkey Punch’s manga series Lupin the Third. The series was produced by studio TMS Entertainment, and the staff credits include director Eiji Suganuma (and Nobuo Tomizawa for Episode 0), series composition writers Takahiro Ōkura and Shigeru Murakoshi, character designer Hirotaka Marufuji (and Hisao Yokobori for Episode 0), and music composed by Yuji Ohno. The series first aired in Japan on October 2021.

Background:

“The stage is set in London. Lupin targets a treasure hidden by the Raven, a mysterious organisation that controls the British government from the shadows. The clue to the treasure is a single painting. Standing in his way are Scotland Yard and MI6. And then there is the well-known Inspector Zenigata. Even detective Sherlock Holmes makes an appearance.

A mysterious jewel called the “unknown” tied to Lupin’s roots and the remnants of a certain woman appear. One after the other, more captivating women show up. What are the treasures and who are these women toying with Lupin and his gang?”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, April 2024.

I am a big fan of the Lupin the Third franchise, in fact it’s one of the first anime I had watched when I got into it completely in 2012 after watching Akira, Ghost in the Shell and the Studio Ghibli catalogue. At the time though it was mainly the films and not the shows and television specials that I had seen, but the series and characters were interesting enough to go back and watch more.

Each Lupin series presented Lupin with a different colour jacket and the latter series even introduced different locations. In Lupin the Third Part IV, Lupin and his crew were in Italy which was a great series, while Lupin the Third Part 5 brought the crew over to France. In Lupin the Third Part 6 we are now in the United Kingdom, namely London.

I did manage to watch Lupin the Third Part IV and Lupin the Third Part 5 during simulcast, however I missed out on Lupin the Third Part 6 because streaming-wise it was exclusive to HIDIVE which is with Sentai Filmworks. TMS Entertainment pretty much started distancing themselves from Crunchyroll and went with Sentai Filmworks from what I can gather, though Discotek Media does have good relations with them.

The Lupin the Third Part II English cast did reprise their roles for the new series at least (though mainly the existing crew who came back for the Discotek releases), though in Japan we also have Kiyoshi Kobayashi’s final performance as Jigen with Episode 0 before he retired from the role. He voiced the character from the beginning with the pilot film in 1966.

While Discotek Media have the rights for many of the instalments, Sentai Filmworks were the ones who managed to secure the North American rights for Lupin the Third Part 6 on streaming and home video. Anime Limited was able to distribute the series for the UK & Ireland for home video.
