Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot Wandering; Agateram & Paladin; Agateram (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot (Fate/Grand Order -神聖円卓領域キャメロット-, Fate/Grand Order Shinsei Entaku Ryōiki Camelot) is a 2020-2021 theatrical anime film series based on the mobile game series Fate/Grand Order developed by Delightworks, which is then based on Type-Moon’s Fate/Stay Night franchise.

The first film subtitled Wandering; Agateram was produced by studio Signal.MD, and the staff credits include director Kei Suezawa, screenplay writer Ukyō Kodachi, character designers Kazuchika Kise, Mieko Hosoi & Nakaya Onsen, and music composers Hideyuki Fukasawa & Keita Haga. The film was theatrically released in Japan on December 2020.

The second film subtitled Paladin; Agateram was produced by studio Production I.G, and the staff credits include director Kazuto Arai, screenplay writer Kazuto Arai & Ukyō Kodachi, character designers Kazuchika Kise, Mieko Hosoi & Nakaya Onsen, and music composers Hideyuki Fukasawa & Keita Haga. The film was theatrically released in Japan on May 2021.

Background:

“”Even then, he seeks an end to his journey.”

The wandering knight, Bedivere, reaches the end of his journey.
It is A.D. 1273 in Jerusalem. The Holy Land has been transformed into a massive desert and its people have been forced out of their homes as three major powers wage war with each other in this wasteland. The Knights of the Round Table come together to protect the Holy City and their Lion King. With the whole of his kingdom summoned into a strange land, Ozymandias, the Sun King, quietly plots against the tyranny of this bizarre realm. The mountain people, protectors of those who were stripped of their land, await their chance at rebellion. In order to fulfill his mission, Bedivere heads for the Holy City where the Lion King rules. There he meets humanity’s final Master, Ritsuka Fujimaru, who has come to Jerusalem, accompanied by his Demi-Servant, Mash Kyrielight, in their quest to restore human history.”

Plot Synopsis via Aniplex of America, December 2021.

Type-Moon have worked on a few projects over the past few decades but it was Fate/Stay Night that blew it tremendously both locally and internationally. While some prefer Kara no Kyoukai or Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night was more popular and known amongst the community. The original eroge visual novel was mostly known internationally through its anime adaptation by studio Deen and then popularity resurged itself when Ufotable released their anime adaptations for both Fate/Zero and the Fate/Stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works] series.

And if you thought that was it for the franchise, Aniplex & Delightworks then decided to produce a gacha mobile game called Fate/Grand Order in 2015, expanding the franchise with tons of new storylines and characters. To summarise I would say that it’s similar in concept to Marvel’s Avengers because various Fate stories collide with this gacha. From there it is pretty much one of the most profitable games ever made and I recall it gathered billions of dollars in revenue, which is pretty impressive considering the gacha wasn’t available internationally for most of its time (the UK for instance didn’t get official access until 2022, whereas North America has had it since 2017).

Rather than adapting another version of the Fate story route or even Hollow Ataraxia, Aniplex and Type-Moon decided to adapt some of the arcs that Fate/Grand Order have to offer. Previously we saw a one-off special called Fate/Grand Order -First Order- which was a mini tease or promotion to what the gacha game has to offer, but now we have more than that.

In 2018 Aniplex revealed two anime projects; a television anime series called Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia, and a theatrical anime project called Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot which consists of two films and interestingly done by different studios. Wandering; Agateram worked on by Signal.MD and Paladin; Agateram by Production I.G.

While Babylonia was released first, the films are an adaptation of the 6th Singularity arc: Camelot that is part of the Observer on Timeless Temple storyline, which makes the anime release order a bit weird because you would think Camelot should be the entry point since its before the other. But regardless considering their timing watching either should be fine as long as you have some knowledge of the Fate/Stay Night anime to make it easier to jump in.

Aniplex of America have the English speaking rights for the IP, which includes Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot and since it was given a theatrical release, it wasn’t made available for streaming though I believe it is now on Crunchyroll for US & Canada viewers. The films did make its way onto home video and much like previous Fate titles, Aniplex of America went for the premium Japanese home video style approach with their releases which means high costs and some interesting physical item inclusions.

Now Aniplex has no problem making their titles available to other distributors in other regions, for instance Madman was available to license and release Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot for Australia & New Zealand, but for some reason the United Kingdom & Ireland were left out. MVM Entertainment did try to license the rights but to no avail, and since then barely any Aniplex of America titles has had a chance in the UK outside of Demon Slayer’s first season and film. Even in 2023 going into 2024, Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot has yet to receive a UK home video release.

Limited Edition Contents:

Aniplex of America are rather inconsistent when it comes to packaging designs because Fate/Grand Order Divine Realm of the Round Table: Camelot has gone from a regular Amaray to a DVD-sized digipack approach like the Fate/Stay Night [Heaven’s Feel] trilogy.

Each limited edition box set features a rigid box that houses an digipack with the original soundtrack CD as well as two booklets; an Artbook and Animation Material. The Animation Material includes character designs, illustrations as well as interviews and information about the film plus its soundtrack. The Artbook focuses more on artwork illustrated by various artists to promote the film. Both films share the same format.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Aniplex limited edition releases. The SRP for each limited edition film are $79.98, and both sets don’t have an exact unit count, but Aniplex tends to reprint these releases until a box set is available in Japan.

I ordered the limited editions from Rightstuf during the Farewell discount code sale, which is a rare opportunity to which Aniplex of America titles were able to be discounted for a cheaper price. While these are films Aniplex of America has yet to provide any plans to release a standard edition for either film or even a collection.
