Mieruko-chan (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Mieruko-chan (見える子ちゃん) is a 2021 television anime series based on Tomoki Izumi’s manga of the same name. The television series is directed by Yuki Ogawa and produced by studio Passione. Staff credits also include writer Kenta Ihara and music composed by Kana Utatane. The series first aired in Japan on October 2021.

Background:

“Ignore them and they won’t hurt you—at least that’s what Miko tells herself when she starts seeing ghosts! Goosebumps and hilarity ensue as she tries to hide her shrieks of terror. But can she keep this up as ghosts LITERALLY breathe down her neck?!”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll, March 2023.

A few years ago I remember book publisher Yen Press picked up the rights to release Mieruko-chan for English audiences. The concept of a girl who can see scary ghosts and basically tries to act normal whilst disturbed was an interesting idea. Studio Passione, who adapted High School DxD and a new season of Higurashi, worked on Mieruko-chan‘s adaptation and considering their line of work I say they were a good choice for the series especially for the character designs and horror approach. Whilst I’ve not yet seen the anime it was interesting enough for me to look into its Blu-ray release, and I’ve read that it’s a decent adaptation whilst the manga does go into the horror aspect more (which makes sense as not every horror design can translate into anime, as seen with Junji Ito’s work).

Funimation acquired the streaming and home video rights for Mieruko-chan before the Crunchyroll rebranding began. The series will not be released in the UK by Crunchyroll, so you’re only option is importing either the UK or Australian sets at this point.

Limited Edition Contents:

Mieruko-chan receives a rather nicely packaged limited edition, making full use of the creepy horror artwork the series has for its set.

The limited-edition box set features a rigid box that houses an Amaray case (with a slipcase) as well as a 40-page guide book and a cardboard box featuring 6 art cards, a chibi and spirit sticket sheet, and a Sankai enamel pin. The booklet includes character designs, a description of each of the monsters featured in the series, and a manga chapter.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll limited edition releases.

The SRP for the limited-edition set was $84.98 and there’s no exact unit count. I pre-ordered the limited-edition release from Rightstuf, with the assistance of GotAnime membership and a discount code to lower the costs. The set was ordered alongside ARIFURETA Season 2 so with the two together was cheaper than United Publications in today’s exchange rate. A standard edition Blu-ray & DVD release is also available.
