It’s pretty crazy that over the past decade we have seen hundreds of films from Japan and Hong Kong as well as a couple from mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea make their way onto home video in high definition for the United Kingdom by different distributors. One of the biggest additions came from films starring Jackie Chan who alongside Bruce Lee are probably one of the most famous actors from Asia in film.
Jackie Chan‘s filmography is a mix of Asian cinema and Hollywood cinema, and we’ve seen dozens of his films from Hong Kong make their way onto Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD from distributors 88 Films and Eureka Entertainment. But now Arrow Video have joined in with a special deal from Warner Bros, bringing us six films from his filmography now finally out of limbo and available once again for the UK & US audiences.
Arrow Video produced two variations of the limited edition box set and my copy is based on the variation that’s available across all retailers.

Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits! is a collection of films produced by Golden Harvest but internationally were distributed by Warner Bros, and over time whilst many films were re-released thanks to Fortune Star, the films that Warner Bros acquired were in limbo. A few had seen a release individually but were mainly focused on the English international versions which didn’t go down well with movie lovers and those who wanted to own the original versions of the films. The closest that we got was the HMV Exclusive Premium Collection release of Mr. Nice Guy thanks to including both the Hong Kong Cut as well as the International Cut.
Drunken Master II (醉拳二) is a 1994 film directed by Lau Kar-leung, with screenplay written by Edward Tang, Tong Man-hing and Yuen Kai-chi, and music composed by William Wu Wai-lap (Hong Kong Cut) & Michael Wandermacher (US Cut).
The cast of the film includes Ti Lung (A Better Tomorrow), Anita Mui Yim-Fong (The Heroic Trio), Ram Chiang Chi-Kwong (Fight Back to School II), Lau Kar-leung (8 Diagram Pole Fighter), and Ken Lo Wai-Kwong (Police Story 3: Supercop).
Rumble in the Bronx (紅番區) is a 1995 film directed by Stanley Tong Gwai-Lai, with screenplay written by Edward Tang and Fibe Ma, and music composed by Nathan Wang (Hong Kong Cut) & J. Peter Robinson (US Cut).
The cast of the film includes Anita Mui Yim-Fong (Miracles: The Canton Godfather), Françoise Yip (Black Mask), Bill Tung Biu (Police Story), Marc Akerstream, and Garvin Cross.
Thunderbolt (霹靂火) is a 1995 film directed & written by Gordon Chan, with screenplay written by Chan Hing-kai and Kwok Wai-chung, and music composed by Ryo Kunihiko (Yang Bang-ean).
The cast of the film includes Anita Yuen Wing-Yee (From Beijing With Love), Michael Wong (City Hunter), Dayo Wong Chi-Wah (The Last Dance), Thorsten Nickel, Ken Lo Wai-Kwong (Naked Killer) and Kenya Sawada (Shinjuku Incident).
Police Story 4: First Strike (警察故事4之簡單任務) is a 1996 film directed & written by Stanley Tong Gwai-Lai, with screenplay written by Nick Tramontaine, Greg Mellott and Elliot Tong, and music composed by Nathan Wang (Hong Kong Cut) & J. Peter Robinson (US Cut).
The cast of the film includes Jackson Liu (Fist of Legend), Annie Wu (Gorgeous), Bill Tung Biu (Project A Part II), Yuri Petrov, Nonna Grishaeva, and Ailen Sit Chun-Wai (Seeding of a Ghost).
Mr. Nice Guy (一個好人) is a 1997 film directed by Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, with screenplay written by Edward Tang and Fibe Ma, and music composed by Peter Kam (Hong Kong Cut) & J. Peter Robinson (US Cut).
The cast of the film includes Richard Norton (China O’Brien), Miki Lee (Haunted School), Karen McLymont, Gabrielle Fitzpatrick (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie), Vince Poletto, and Barry Otto (Strictly Ballroom).
Who Am I? (我是誰) is a 1998 film directed by Benny Chan and directed & written by Jackie Chan, with screenplay written by Lee Reynolds and Susan Chan, and music composed by Nathan Wang.
The cast of the film includes Michelle Ferre, Mirai Yamamoto (Voices in the Wind), Ron Smerczak, Ed Nelson, and Ton Pompert.

Arrow Video have always gone all-out with these box sets and Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits! is no exception. The model for this release is kind like a mishmash between the recent Samurai Revolution Trilogy box set and the Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest box set from a few years ago.
There are two variations for this release; the regular edition and the Arrow Store Exclusive edition which features different artwork for the slipcase, cases and disc covers. I went for the regular edition this time (whilst I went for the other variation with Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest box set) which is available across all retailers.
The limited edition release is presented in an o-card slipcase with a rigid box, six 4K Amaray cases, a cardboard box housing twenty-four lobby card reproductions, a double-sided fold-out poster focused on the theatrical posters for Drunken Master II and Rumble in the Bronx, and a 160-page perfect bound book. Each 4K Amaray case comes with a disc or two per film.
The book features different essays; ‘An Evening with Jackie Chan’ by Craig D. Reid from 1994, ‘Jackie Chan’s Wild ’90s: Becoming a Global Action Icon’ by Thorsten Boose, ‘A Sober View of Drunken Mastery: A Ferociously Fantastic Franchise’ by Peter S. Bruce, ‘Jackie Chan’s Road to America’ by Matt McAllister, ‘Jackie Chan, Hong Kong, and the Transnational 1990s’ by Elaine Chung, and ‘From Hong Kong to the World’ by Jialu Zhu.
The box art is clean with no ratings/information on the front and spine, whilst the back cover features the information, synopsis, ratings and specs. The artwork on the Amaray cases (both covers) do include information and specs on the back. The limited edition 4K Ultra HD release retailed for £169.99 SRP. There’s no Blu-ray format and a standard edition 4K Ultra HD release is expected later down the line.

The limited edition release for Jackie Chan’s Breakout Hits! contains six films across ten 4K Ultra HD discs. All the discs were encoded and authored by The Engine House Media Services on behalf of Arrow Video.
There’s a mixture of versions, all brand new 4K restorations from the original negatives, with differing audio and bonus feature content. Below is a list of what this collection includes!

All versions are presented on a single disc.
Police Story 4: First Strike includes two versions of the film; the uncut 107-minute Hong Kong Cut, in Cantonese/English (sync-sound) and Mandarin audio with English & English SDH subtitles; and the 84-minute International Cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles. Each version are presented on their own discs.
Mr. Nice Guy includes three versions of the film; the uncut 97-minute Japanese Cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles; the 96-minute Hong Kong Cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles; and the 88-minute International Cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles. The Japanese & Hong Kong Cuts are presented on one disc and the International Cut on another disc.
Who Am I? includes two versions of the film; the uncut 120-minute Hong Kong cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles; and the 107-minute International Cut, in English audio with English SDH subtitles. Each version are presented on their own discs.
The 4K Ultra HD discs all feature Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range. The white subtitles are unlockable during playback and the discs are playable to 4K players of any region.
