The Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari) is a 2019 television anime series based on a light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Seira Minami. The anime was adapted by studio Kinema Citrus and published by Kadokawa Pictures. The series aired during the Winter 2019 anime season in January.
Background:
“Journeying to a neighboring country, Naofumi and his party are framed for kidnapping princess Melty. Now on the run, Raphtalia recalls her traumatic past, Filo faces her noble destiny, and the Three Heroes Church sacrifices everything to destroy the Devil of the Shield. When a member of the royal family offers to help, will Naofumi accept it?”
Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment, June 2020.
The adventure of the Shield Hero continues with the second half of the Isekai anime series. As we briefly mentioned in the Part 1 post, Crunchyroll approached Kadokawa on the idea of this anime adaptation and was successful internationally. Two more anime seasons were greenlit during Crunchyroll Expo 2019.
Crunchyroll acquired the English speaking rights for the series and is one of the last anime to be released as part of the partnership with Funimation. This is also one of the first Crunchyroll simuldubs so if Funimation didn’t handle the later seasons, the dub cast will remain consistent. Funimation provided a home video release for the series as a Blu-ray & DVD combo with both parts released on the same day in the US. UK distributor Manga Entertainment handled the UK & Ireland rights on behalf of Crunchyroll and Funimation.
Limited Edition Contents:
Like Part 1, Manga Entertainment brought over the limited edition sets for the series over to the UK & Ireland. The SRP for Part 2 is actually a lot smaller than Part 1 because there’s only one physical component included – a light novel booklet. This light novel booklet was included in the Japanese Blu-ray volumes of the series so much like High School DxD HERO it’s a great inclusion to have for the fans. It was translated by William Varteresian. I actually don’t know if the translation will match the One Peace Books light novels though in terms of context.
Physical Contents:
- 200-page Light Novel Book
On-Disc Contents:
Distributor: Manga Entertainment
Released: 27th July 2020
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1 Part 2 contains episodes 14-25 across two Blu-ray discs and two DVD discs using the Funimation author. The audio options available include the main Japanese language with English subtitles and the Crunchyroll English dub. The white subtitles are unlockable during playback, and the regions are locked to B for Blu-ray and 2 for DVD in NTSC format.
I should also note that Shield Hero’s English dub uses an English version of the theme songs rather than the Japanese version, which is a rare occurrence.
