Spy x Family Code: White (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Spy × Family Code: White (劇場版 SPY×FAMILY CODE: White, Gekijōban Supai Famirī Kōdo: Howaito) is a 2023 theatrical anime film based on Tatsuya Endo’s manga series Spy x Family. The film was animated by studios CloverWorks and Wit Studio, and the staff credits include director Takashi Katagiri, screenplay writer Ichirō Ōkōchi, character designer Kazuaki Shimada, and music composed by [K]NoW_NAME. The film theatrically released in Japan on December 2023.

Background:

“He’s a spy. She’s an assassin. Together, Loid and Yor keep their double lives to themselves while pretending to be the perfect family. However, their adopted daughter Anya, a telepath, knows both of their exciting secrets unbeknownst to them. While under the guise of taking his family on a weekend winter getaway, Loid’s attempt to make progress on his current mission Operation Strix proves difficult when Anya mistakenly gets involved and triggers events that threaten world peace!”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, February 2026.

Spy x Family is an entertaining series that originated from Shonen Jump+, a platform that has pretty much exploded in popularity over the past decade. Series such as The 100 Girlfriends, Chained Soldier, Chainsaw Man Part 2, Dandadan, and World’s End Harem all serialised in Shonen Jump+, each of which have ranged from doing pretty well to becoming one of the biggest titles to date worldwide. Spy x Family is definitely among the latter, having released over 16 volumes with three anime seasons plus a film up to this point.

I’ve watched the first season when it simulcasted on Crunchyroll and really enjoyed the premise and direction. It is interesting that both CloverWorks and WIT Studio collaborated together on this, especially the former considering their track record had been pretty hit or miss for adaptations. The first season also had a bit of a weird pacing structure that I recall threw some folks off as the series does focus on the characters and slice-of-life angle than the main story from time to time (to the point where some folks treated it as filler).

After the first season aired, both the second season and theatrical film was released. Spy × Family Code: White is an original film just like any other Shonen Jump adaptation had been in the past (or at least a majority of them given recent trends of having arcs adapted into films), and as long as you are familiar with the characters or have at least seen the first season then you’re pretty much good to go jumping into this film.

Even though Crunchyroll UK & US acquired the rights to release the television series, Anime Limited managed to get their hands on the UK & Ireland rights for this film from TOHO themselves (while Crunchyroll US were still able to get the US & Canada rights). It’s a weird move but considering recent events like TOHO acquiring Anime Limited from Plaion & Embracer Group, it works out. They released the film theatrically in April 2024 and took their time to finally bring it to home video.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited spent ages sorting out their collector’s edition release for Spy × Family Code: White and what we got was a pretty decent offering.

The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, an Amaray case housing both the film and the original soundtrack CD composed by [K]NoW_NAME, a 32-page booklet, an art card and a sticker. The booklet features character designs, background & illustrated artwork and interviews with the Japanese voice cast and staff.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £49.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £19.99.

I pre-ordered the film on its own during Anime Limited’s early bird offer last February for £34.99 (£31.50 with the 10% off Anime Unlimited discount) plus £3.50 postage.
