Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 (Kidō Senshi Gandamu Tekketsu no Orufenzu) is a 2016 original television anime series by studio Sunrise, director Tatsuyuki Nagai and writer Mari Okada. It is a continuation to the first season that previously aired a year prior. This series aired during the Autumn 2016 anime season in October.
Background:
“After the escort of Kudelia Aina Bernstein led to deadly battles, the Tekkadan organization began to rise, with Mikazuki Augus taking part. While many lives were lost, the conflict exposed the corruption of Gjallarhorn, helping the world slowly change.
But as Tekkadan gained the rights to halfmetal, they began to attract attention from a new enemy – one they’ll face with the Gundam Barbatos Lupus!”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, August 2020.
As mentioned before, Gundam still does surprisingly well for the UK market. Most collector’s editions for the Gundam franchise had sold out and there was enough demand to give Gundam SEED an Ultimate Edition using Nozomi’s Ultra Edition contents which is rad. While Anime Limited focused on going after previously released Gundam titles over the past year like Wing and 00, they were able to offer Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans which was under Funimation’s belt in the US & Canada.
As mentioned before, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans was not part of the Nozomi & Rightstuf partnership with Sunrise so there were some concerns about the UK consistency. Fortunately Anime Limited was able to get the license and the consistency continues. Dubbing was done by Sunrise through Bang Zoom! Entertainment so Funimation’s sole involvement is adding the series for streaming and releasing it on Blu-ray for America.
Season 1 was just released recently after some pushback and thankfully Season 2 is here sooner than later.
Collector’s Edition Contents:
For the Gundam franchise, Anime Limited is giving each Gundam anime a rigid box to house the film or series with one or a couple of physical additions. For the Gundam titles that have multiple parts, like Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, the first half came with a box to house both parts.
Season 2, aka the second half, comes with a booklet with some nice artwork and content.
Like the other Anime Limited sets, this release is 1000 units only and I received my copy early as part of pre-ordering the set during MVM’s 20% off sale which occurred during the Cloud Matsuri convention weekend. The SRP is £59.99 and the early bird price was £34.99.
Physical Contents:
- 44-page Booklet
On-Disc Contents:
Distributor: Anime Limited
Released: 31st August 2020
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Season 2 contains episodes 1 to 25 across four Blu-ray discs using the Funimation author. The audio options available include the main Japanese language with English subtitles and the Bang Zoom! English dub.
Similar to the first season set, this is a Funimation authored title so we have white subtitles locked during playback, and the regions locked to B for Blu-ray. The Funimation release was originally released across four parts (two per season), hence why the disc count is inconsistent for this set.
Interestingly unlike the first season, the second season Blu-ray discs do contain textless songs.
