The Quintessential Quintuplets (Go-Tōbun no Hanayome) is a 2019 television anime series based on the manga series written and illustrated by Negi Haruba. The anime was adapted by studio Tezuka Productions and published by TBS. The series aired during the Winter 2019 anime season in January.
Background:
“Desperate to pay off his family’s debt, Futaro Uesugi quintuples his troubles when he accepts a new job—tutoring a set of quintuplets! If he can’t get Itsuki, Miku, Ichika, Nino, and Yotsuba to hit the books, he can kiss his paycheck goodbye.”

So I remember hearing about this series way before the anime was announced and I was curious but never checked it out until the adaptation aired. Colour me surprised that the anime was pretty entertaining though the animation does drop in quality in production which is a shame, but that didn’t stop the Quintuplet train rolling with manga sales going up insanely and a second season got greenlit as soon as the first season ended. The manga has finished but that’s fine, not everything needs to go on forever. I also like all five of the Quintuplet girls, not because they each have pouting expressions.
Crunchyroll acquired the English speaking rights for the series and is one of the last remaining titles to be part of the partnership with Funimation. Funimation provided a English simuldub and home video release for the series as a Blu-ray & DVD combo. There are plans to bring the series over to the UK however the limited edition won’t be included due to bad timing.
Limited Edition Contents:
Funimation’s limited editions generally present themselves as a rigid box with an amaray case and a couple of physical extras. For The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 1, we have a rigid box that is much larger than the others due to including everything inside the set rather than having parts of it included outside. The box includes the show’s standard edition with its slipcover, a 52-page artbook and a filler box.
Included inside the filler box are a couple of art cards and a special Japanese Shikishi featuring one of the quintuplets which is randomised for each unit. I did notice some artwork have been re-used so I wish there could have been more variety but I guess that was down to limitations.
Funimation does not disclose the unit allocation for their special editions but the SRP is $84.98.
