Back in September 2018, after some delay from shipping, I received a limited edition release that was pre-ordered from the US via Deep Discount and was one of the last titles I unboxed before switching here. Here’s an unboxing redux look at Sentai Filmworks’ now out of print limited edition release of No Game, No Life: Zero.
No Game, No Life: Zero is a 2017 feature-length anime film directed by Atsuko Ishizuka, animated by studio Madhouse and published by Kadokawa Pictures. Based on the light novel series No Game, No Life written by Yuu Kamiya, the film adapts the sixth light novel volume of the story which takes place before the events of the series.
No Game, No Life is a pretty popular isekai series and the anime has been well-loved by many. While the light novel is still on-going there hasn’t been much going on for the anime side of things, as it took a long while until Madhouse and Kadokawa finally offered a film adaptation that covers more of the source material.
In terms of licensing, No Game, No Life: Zero has been picked up by Sentai Filmworks who have the rights for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland. The UK & Ireland rights were sub-licensed to MVM Entertainment along the way. In a surprise move, the film was given a limited edition treatment to match the main series which has long since sold out. Both the limited edition and standard edition were released in the US & Canada in August 2018. Another surprising move is that Sentai Filmworks has also offered the film a Spanish dub and subtitles support, which is a nice inclusion for Spanish anime fans.
No Game, No Life: Zero from Sentai Filmworks contains the film on a single Blu-ray and DVD disc, using the Sentai Filmworks master in this limited edition set. The audio options include Sentai Filmworks’ English and Spanish dubs in addition to the original Japanese with English and Spanish subtitles. The subtitles are locked during playback.
While the main Blu-ray region is A, Sentai Filmworks uses a geo-lock mechanic which will allow users to play the disc as long as their Blu-ray player’s country code is set to the United States (however, if you own a PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you will be able to play the disc as normal). The DVD region is, however, locked to Region 1 in NTSC format.
The limited edition Blu-ray & DVD is almost out of print, but a standard edition Blu-ray and DVD release are available to order through Amazon US.
