Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II (ダンジョンに出会いを求めるのは間違っているだろうかII, Danjon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darō ka II), also known as DanMachi II, is a 2019 television anime series based on Fujino Ōmori’s light novel of the same name. It was adapted into an anime by studio J.C.Staff with director Hideki Tachibana taking over from Yoshiki Yamakawa, writer Hideki Shirane and publisher Hakuhodo DY MAP (Showgate). The series first broadcast in Japan on July 2019 as part of the Summer season.

Background:

“There’s rarely a dull moment when you’re the champion of a tiny Familia, and things only get rougher for Bell when the God Apollo declares war on Hestia and her followers. With Apollo’s Familia able to field a hundred times as many men, Hestia will have to work a lot of favors to keep her Familia from being completely destroyed. Even if Bell and Hestia manage to pull off the impossible, a major debt that Hestia owes is about to come due and Lili’s sordid past comes back to haunt her! Which means that when Bell and his friends come to Lili’s aid, it sets into motion yet another impending clash of the titans that may destroy everything in IS IT WRONG TO TRY TO PICK UP GIRLS IN A DUNGEON? II!”

Plot Synopsis via Sentai Filmworks, October 2020.

With Isekai dominating every anime season even if its good or bad, it’s impressive that a fantasy series like Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? continues to be popular. The first season came out back in 2015 but a second season was greenlit alongside a theatrical film called Arrow of the Orion. J.C.Staff returns to adapt the anime, though that film is non-canon.

The second season of DanMachi was pretty good, but light novel writers were concerned about its pacing as it adapts Volumes 6 to 8. Apparently any missing gaps from the anime were covered in the mobile game Memoria Freese which doesn’t help. A third season aired the same time this premium box set was released, and there’s more anime incoming!

Like Season 1, DanMachi II was acquired for distribution by Sentai Filmworks and was streamed on Crunchyroll and HIDIVE for simulcast, with the latter offering a dubcast as well. To keep consistency with the first season, Sentai Filmworks released the series as part of their premium limited edition line-up and came out a bit later than the regular edition. In the UK, MVM Entertainment has a solid relationship with Sentai and acquired the sub-license for DanMachi II despite Animatsu releasing Season 1 before.

Limited Edition Contents:

Sentai Filmworks started offering special premium limited edition releases roughly around 2014-2015 period and did well enough to offer more for specific titles over the years. They were expensive, but often get discounted on sales for really good value especially if you live in North America where customs don’t exist.

This release of DanMachi II was one of the select number of shows that was packaged outside of the usual shaped box sets. It’s presented as a large square rigid box with everything housed inside it, with strings to remove the cases and items without issue, but this box is smaller than the first season in terms of the length. Inside the box you have two DVD cases, a 56-page hardcover booklet, 5 art cards and a shadow box. Inside the DVD cases are the Blu-ray & DVD discs. Unlike the first season, there are no physical items kept inside the DVD cases.

The shadow box setup is rather fragile so for this unboxing post I decided not to build it in case I end up causing damage. I might add it in later but it’s a very unique idea that Sentai has come up with for these sets.

The premium limited edition was priced at SRP $179.98 and is almost sold out at the time of this post. I ordered it through Rightstuf from their Summer sale at $75 for the item price which compared to last time now supports pre-paid VAT (at $15) so it can skip the handling fees for customs. In addition, the shipping cost was $35 as they chose FedEx, so it’s expensive but will arrive way faster than usual.
