Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon (Fate/Grand Order -終局特異点 冠位時間神殿ソロモン-, Fate/Grand Order -Kyūshoku Tokuiten Kani Jikan Shinden Solomon-) is a 2021 theatrical anime film series based on the mobile game series Fate/Grand Order developed by Delightworks, which is then based on Type-Moon’s Fate/Stay Night franchise. The film was produced by studio CloverWorks, and the staff credits include director Toshifumi Akai, screenplay writer Kinoko Nasu, character designer Tomoaki Takase, and music composers Keita Haga & Ryo Kawasaki. The film was theatrically released in Japan on July 2021.

Background:

“”This is the final battle to take back our future.”

The Chaldea Security Organization has been working day and night in a tireless effort to repair the Singularities spread across time to restore human history. Master Ritsuka Fujimaru and Demi-Servant Mash Kyrielight, supported by their friends in Chaldea, head to face their last, greatest showdown: the Final Singularity.

How will the final battle to reclaim our future end?”

Plot Synopsis via Aniplex of America, July 2022.

The Fate franchise continues to grow each year with tons of characters, story arcs and adaptations across multiple mediums whether its anime, stage play and video games that aren’t visual novels or gacha. Since 2015, Aniplex and Delightworks released Fate/Grand Order, a mobile gacha that has earned tons of revenue and millions of people are playing it each year.

In 2018 Aniplex started their anime adaptations for a few of the story arcs covered in the mobile game with Babylonia as a television series and Camelot as a two-part theatrical film project. As soon as the former finished airing, they immediately announced another anime adaptation – this time called Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon. This one adapts the 8th Singularity arc: Solomon, also known as Final Singularity: Solomon which concludes the first major storyline Observer on Timeless Temple. In a sense, Aniplex have pretty much not bothered to adapt the first five story arcs and instead focused on the last few, which is an odd choice but at the same time if the fans don’t like the earlier content then that’s fair enough.

Because this is the last part of the storyline, those who have watched Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon have commented on how confusing it can be for anime only viewers. So while you may be able to get through it with just the knowledge of Babylonia and Camelot without playing the games, and maybe even watching previous Fate shows, there may be some context missing as a result of not knowing the previous singularities, though this could also be because they adapted the arc as a film than a series or a multi-part film which would rush or cut content.

Aniplex of America have the English speaking rights for the IP, which includes Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon and since it was given a theatrical release, it wasn’t made available for streaming immediately but is available now on Crunchyroll for US & Canada viewers. The film did make its way onto home video and much like previous Fate titles, Aniplex of America went for the premium Japanese home video style approach with their releases which means high costs and some interesting physical item inclusions.

Now Aniplex has no problem making their titles available to other distributors in other regions, but I don’t believe Madman has released Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon for Australia & New Zealand, and it’s obviously not available in the United Kingdom & Ireland because the previous Fate/Grand Order projects didn’t either outside of First Order many years back.

Limited Edition Contents:

Aniplex of America are rather inconsistent when it comes to packaging designs because Fate/Grand Order Final Singularity – Grand Temple of Time: Solomon has somehow merged both the same position design as Babylonia with the DVD-sized digipack approach as Camelot.

The limited edition box set features a rigid box that houses an digipack with the original soundtrack CD as well as two booklets; an Artbook and Animation Material. The Animation Material includes character designs, illustrations as well as interviews and information about the film plus its soundtrack. The Artbook focuses more on artwork illustrated by various artists to promote the film. Both films share the same format.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Aniplex limited edition releases, however there is no title on the spine for these sets which is little annoying so you will want to keep hold of the info card to help identify what it is. The SRP for this limited edition release is $79.98, and doesn’t have an exact unit count, but Aniplex tends to reprint these releases until a box set is available in Japan.

I ordered the limited edition from Rightstuf during the Farewell discount code sale, which is a rare opportunity to which Aniplex of America titles were able to be discounted for a cheaper price. While this is a film, Aniplex of America has yet to provide any plans to release a standard edition at this point.
