Owarimonogatari is a 2015 & 2017 television anime series based on the novel series written by NisiOisiN. The anime was directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, adapted by studio Shaft, and published by Aniplex. While Owarimonogatari is the second story arc in the Monogatari series: Final Season saga, but its second season is the fourth story arc.
Background:
“”About how I, Koyomi Araragi, am going to end… and begin. That’s this story”
Koyomi wakes up to see Mayoi Hachikuji before him, the girl who supposedly had gone to the afterlife. She tells Koyomi that they are currently in Avichi, the lowest levels of hell. Koyomi is dubious of how Mayoi knew about the exact timing of his death and which hell he would drop into, when Mayoi tells him that she was there to pick him up by the request of a certain individual.”

Monogatari over the years has managed to become a big hit with the anime community, and while the series wasn’t dubbed in English it continues to attract audiences with its dialogue, animation and story arcs.
For this post, we have Owarimonogatari once again, but the first season covered two thirds of the whole story arc. The second season, which is labelled as Volume 3 of the whole arc by Aniplex, covers the remaining third of the story arc and had aired later due to taking place after the events of Koyomimonogatari. The spotlight is shared between the characters Koyomi Araragi, Ougi Oshino, Mayoi Hachikuji and Hitagi Senjougahara. Saying that, these story arcs take place across various moments throughout the franchise and can be hard to follow or confusing if you think too much about it. That being said, the ideal approach to watch the Monogatari franchise is to view them in story arc order.
Owarimonogatari Volume 3 adapts the 17th novel which covers three story arcs; Mayoi Hell, Hitagi Rendezvous, and Ougi Dark. I won’t be mentioning any spoilers, however the plot synopsis and photos of the booklet below will have them.
Monogatari series: Final Season has been licensed and released in the United States and Canada by Aniplex of America. MVM did bring some of these arcs over to the UK via sub-license, however I had already began supporting the series via the Aniplex releases since January 2014 so for consistency reasons I continued with them. MVM has yet to acquire Koyomimonogatari, Owarimonogatari Volume 3 and Zoku Owarimonogatari as of January 2021 for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Limited Edition Contents:
Aniplex of America released the Monogatari franchise in volume type sets that include a strong thick cardboard box with a Blu-ray Amaray case, a booklet and a set of cards. Owarimonogatari Volume 3 continues this trend. The Aniplex Proof of Purchase card is included with this package.
The SRP for this release is $89.98 and as you can tell, it is not cheap. Aniplex goes through a different path compared to Funimation and Sentai, where they bring over the releases in the best possible result for the price. This includes Japanese quality Blu-ray discs and special packaging to appeal for the collector’s market.
