TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You Season 1 (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You (トニカクカワイイ, Tonikaku Kawaii) is a 2020 television anime series based on Kenjirō Hata’s manga series Fly Me to the Moon. The series was adapted by studio Seven Arcs, and the staff credits include director Hiroshi Ikehata, series composition writer Kazuho Hyodo, character designer Masakatsu Sasaki, and music composed by Endō. The anime first aired in Japan on October 2020.

Background:

“Having grown up ridiculed for his bizarre name, Nasa Yuzaki strives to be remembered for something more. Fortunately, it seems he’s on the right path, ranking first in the nation’s mock exams and set to enter his high school of choice. However, everything changes in a single night when he notices a girl across the street on his way home. Enraptured by her overwhelming cuteness, it’s love at first sight for Nasa. But in his infatuated daze, he fails to notice the approaching danger speeding down the road and finds himself at death’s door.

Barely alive thanks to the girl’s intervention, Nasa musters the courage to confess his love to her, fearing she might otherwise vanish from his life. She accepts his proposal on one condition: marriage, to which Nasa gladly accepts before passing out from his injuries. Upon waking, however, the girl is nowhere to be found. After recovering from his injuries, Nasa tosses his previous ambitions aside and dedicates his life to finding the girl that captured his heart, yet several years pass to no avail. But one night, when an unexpected visitor comes knocking on his door, Nasa finds himself facing a woman that would forever change his world: his wife.”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, November 2024.

Kenjirō Hata is a name some may recognise if they have been watching anime and reading manga since the 2000s. He’s known for writing the series Hayate the Combat Butler which ran for 52 volumes between 2004 to 2017 for Weekly Shonen Sunday and received four anime seasons and a film which is also lengthy. The series I recall was pretty popular and the manga did well, but the anime didn’t have much reception in the west which I believe is due to how the first series was distributed by Bandai Entertainment then the rest were in limbo until Sentai Filmworks rescued and released them all subtitled only.

Once Hayate the Combat Butler was wrapped up, Hata then started a new series for the same magazine called Fly Me to the Moon, known in Japan as Tonikaku Kawaii, which began in 2018. The manga is currently serialising with 29 volumes and is also doing well. Viz Media have been releasing the series in English like they did with Hayate the Combat Butler, and to no one’s surprise there’s an anime adaptation. This time however, Crunchyroll stepped in and co-produced the series which I suppose they did to make use of the popularity of the author’s works. Also for some reason, the anime was renamed as TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You.

Crunchyroll’s co-production projects, or Crunchyroll Originals as they call it, have been rather hit or miss. I definitely enjoyed Tower of God and while So I’m a Spider, So What? had a lot of rough animation parts, the rest of its adaptation were solid. Everything else in the line-up I have heard have been either bland, mediocre, a rushed adaptation or an absolute trainwreck that makes you go ‘how did this not go through quality control’. Saying that, I have heard TONIKAWA is one of the few good adaptations and did well enough to receive a couple OVA episodes and a second season, so hopefully it maintains the good quality all the way to the end of the story.

Anime Limited, as part of their expansion to North America, announced they had picked up the sub-license for the anime for home video from Crunchyroll for both the United Kingdom & Ireland and United States & Canada territories alongside a few other titles at Anime NYC in November 2022. It took a while but the first season has now been released with an OVA.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Since the series is getting released in both the UK & USA, a collector’s edition is also here for TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You. Interestingly they decided not to give this a digipack but opted for a case compared to the previous UK/USA titles A Place Further Than the Universe and To the Abandoned Sacred Beasts.

This release is presented with a rigid box containing a Scanavo case to house the Blu-ray discs, and alongside the case is a 16-page Bonus Manga booklet (which was probably exclusive to the Japanese Blu-ray volumes) and a fold-out A3 sized poster.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has 1000 units printed for an SRP of £69.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £39.99.

The series was included as part of their August 2024 early bird line-up which I have ordered from. The set was on offer for £39.99 with the Anime Unlimited membership lowering the cost down to £35.99. Going forward, there will be postage fees for orders below £50 on their retail store, which means if this goes on offer again for the same price it will be £43.43 on offer and £39.49 for the membership price.

Is it using the CR subs as-is with the typesetting, or a stripped down version?
