Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (劇場版 鬼滅の刃 無限列車編, Gekijouban Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen) is a 2020 theatrical anime film based on Koyoharu Gotōge’s manga of the same name. The film was produced by studio Ufotable with director Haruo Sotozaki and music composers Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina, and was theatrically released in Japanese theaters on October 2020.

Background:

“Tanjiro and the group have completed their rehabilitation training at the Butterfly Mansion, and they arrive to their next mission on the Mugen Train, where over 40 people have disappeared in a very short period of time.

Tanjiro and Nezuko, along with Zenitsu and Inosuke, join one of the most powerful swordsmen within the Demon Slayer Corps, Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku, to face the demon aboard the Mugen Train on track to despair.”

Plot Synopsis via Funimation UK, April 2022.

Since I last acquired the Blu-rays for the first season of Demon Slayer, the anime has since gone into ridiculous levels of popularity, as high as the likes of Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia to provide some examples. Part of this is because of that one episode that was animated well, while the other is due to the massive box office success of the film in Japan – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

Now while Aniplex of America have released the film on Blu-ray, the story arc did eventually get compiled into a television version that was followed up by the Entertainment District arc. I did watch the television version first for Mugen Train arc and if you want my honest opinion – you can tell this was better suited for film format due to how the pacing was treated. Saying that, I never actually got the opportunity to watch the film version, so here we are.

In the UK, Funimation UK distributed the film for theatrical and unfortunately acquired the home video rights so rather than Anime Limited tackling the franchise it’s been handed over to Funimation’s UK branch. Funimation did release the film’s standard edition on home video in North America though so it does make sense.

Limited Edition Contents:

So here we have another unique release. Rather than going for their usual limited edition packaging, Funimation UK and Madman have mirrored the Aniplex of America release for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

The limited edition release comes presented in a rigid box, DVD-size, that houses a digipack containing the film on Blu-ray as well as the original soundtrack CD. Also included in the set is a deluxe booklet with interviews from both the staff and the Japanese cast. Basically everything here is the exact same as the Aniplex of America release which is very rare for non-US releases, the difference is the disc which has Funi logos and the rigid box which is thinner than the US & Japanese sets.

The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like recent Funimation UK limited edition releases. The limited edition Blu-ray, retailing for £64.99, is limited to an unspecified number of units, ideally 1000 but since this is a recent blockbuster hit there may be more units allocated to the set. A standard edition Blu-ray and DVD are also going to be available on the same date as the limited edition.

I pre-ordered the film via United Publications to get the best possible price early on, which was £35.74 plus postage.
