Grav’s Complete Otaku Collection – 2020 Edition

A year ago I managed to provide an update on my current collection of stuff that I have acquired since 2012. The collection featured a bunch of new additions, and part of that was due to a large gap between that update and the previous one. In addition the video games were mostly absent due to location issues.

As 2021 is close approaching and the fact that the 2020 haul has improved drastically I decided to provide a complete collection update once again. This is the eighth major update since I first showcased my collection back in August 2013 on my previous blog.

Before showcasing the titles that I have acquired or are on the shelf, there are a few mini updates since the previous one. First is that I have moved back to my home as my studies at University have concluded and also because of the recent pandemic that has caused problems for everyone.

I now have a third main shelf plus two additional rows to go with it. Last year I received new shelves because I have a bigger room which was an opportunity that I had waited years for. And lastly, because my video games are back with everything else, the glass shelf makes a returning appearance.

Before and After comparison between Update #07 (2019) and Update #08 (2020)

So let’s begin!

#01 | Anime Limited

I changed the order of the shelves a fair bit so we are starting with Anime Limited first and foremost. This is the distributor where more than half of the new anime went towards because I love owning their sets.

I don’t collect every single Anime Limited CE but that being said, a majority of their titles are the ones I generally go for anyway. The Screen Anime membership also helped with the savings so that was handy.

#02 | Manga Entertainment

So last year, Manga was bought by Funimation and since then more and more Funimation (and also some Crunchyroll licenses that were part of that defunct partnership years ago) titles were slowly being released. Because importing is expensive enough as it is, I decided to make use of Manga’s UK releases whenever possible.

I also acquired a bunch of limited editions which are mainly UK variations of Funimation releases so that part is saved for the other section below.

  • Black Clover Season 1
  • Dr. STONE Season 1 Part 1
  • I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
  • My Hero Academia Season 1
  • My Hero Academia Season 2
  • My Hero Academia the Movie: Heroes Rising
  • My Hero Academia the Movie: Two Heroes
  • RADIANT Season 1 Part 1
  • Saga of Tanya the Evil
  • Soul Eater
  • Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 1 Part 1

#03 | Aniplex of America

Everyone’s most hated distributor (well saying that, seems the hate is now towards Funimation these days), but even though their prices are not cheap the sets themselves are pretty nice.

As I have mentioned in recent years I have changed my stance in terms of what I acquire from the distributor for funding reasons. It’s mainly going to be used for the Fate and Monogatari franchise now, unless another big series steps in to grab my interest to the max.

My plan was to grab the remainder of Monogatari during 2020, but I had some funding issues plus the uncertainty of the currency rate meant a delay for the last two sets I needed.

  • Koyomimonogatari
  • Owarimonogatari Volume 1
  • Owarimonogatari Volume 2

#04 | Sentai

Sentai, also known as Sentai Filmworks, is a distributor that I am pretty much up-to-date with in terms of their special editions, especially as MVM is offering UK variants. That being said, much like Aniplex, I plan to keep the DanMachi franchise consistent with Sentai for the collection so I plan to try and grab the second season and the film next year if I can.

No new items this time around which is an odd change of pace. Then again the sales from this distributor are not accessible to UK customers.

#05 | MVM Entertainment

Hey look it’s MVM. This was a distributor that years ago I initially blacklisted from my collection due to their QC issues and packaging, but over time they have managed to slowly make their way back up to the ranks of being worth checking out. The packaging can still be messy at times but it’s nowhere near as bad as their older sets. Despite my stance on the distributor in the past, I will be supporting them more into 2021 whenever I can.

Not many new additions in terms of their special editions but I did go for their sale for once so we have some more regular sets also.

The new MVM Collector’s Edition additions are:

  • Mysteria Friends
  • Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

The new MVM regular Blu-ray additions are:

  • The Eccentric Family Season 1
  • Girlish Number
  • Love and Lies
  • Love, Election and Chocolate
  • Photo Kano
  • Seven Mortal Sins

#06 | Funimation

Years ago I used to try and grab every Funimation limited edition I could get but eventually I got out of that mental idea and finally just chose the titles that I want to own personally. The currency rate being messy in recent years also helped with the decision and eventually Manga started to bring these sets to the UK so that was helpful.

There’s nothing new in terms of the regular US versions from Funimation, so this update is mainly for the limited editions I managed to acquire as well as a few Funimation UK titles that managed to make it to the collection before they were fully discontinued.

The new Funimation Limited Edition additions are:

  • Attack on Titan: Junior High
  • Freezing
  • Freezing Vibration
  • The Quintessential Quintuplets Season 1
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 1 Part 2

The new Manga Entertainment Limited Edition additions are:

  • ARIFURETA: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest Season 1
  • Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 1
  • Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2
  • Cautious Hero: The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious
  • Dr. STONE Season 1 Part 2
  • RADIANT Season 1 Part 2
  • The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1 Part 1
  • The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1 Part 2
  • SSSS.GRIDMAN
  • Wise Man’s Grandchild
  • ZOMBIE LAND SAGA

The new Funimation UK additions are:

  • Barakamon
  • Heavy Object Part 1
  • Heavy Object Part 2
  • Shomin Sample
  • Yurikuma Arashi

#07 | Misc. Anime / PlayStation Vita

In this section we have some anime that I bought over the years. The Bandai Visual & Honneamise titles as well as Bandai Visual Japan, Pied Piper and NIS America’s Premium DVD-sized sets. Nothing new was added for these publishers.

I was also having space issues so we have the PlayStation Vita games altogether in this row, with the PlayStation TV device as well. No new Vita games were acquired in 2020 though I did acquire some in 2018 & 2019 so I may as well recap them below since I didn’t include them in the previous update.

#08 | PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4

Next we have the video games. I somehow managed to place all of my PlayStation games into the last two rows on my main shelves, well I say almost as the Japanese imports are in another section.

I acquired the PlayStation 3 in 2013 and PlayStation 4 in 2016, and while I have mostly finished buying games for the former, the latter I am honestly way behind with as there’s tons of games left to get. There’s plenty more to acquire but many factors are taken into note, such as pricing and availability. I have picked up some western titles over the years but at the moment the main focus is getting the Japanese games first.

But yeah, since then I have acquired over 100 PS3 games and over 115 PS4 games for these two consoles. As the previous update did not cover both consoles, this update will mention the titles I have acquired since the 6th update post. There’s a lot.

At the bottom row of my glass shelf are the rest of my PlayStation 3 and 4 games, which is basically the Japanese imports. I have slowed down on my import haul due to various factors (like more games getting localised releases) but there are a couple more to get in the future. I didn’t acquire any in 2020 but there were a few PS4 imports in 2019.

#08 | Asian Cinema / Misc. Anime (Part 2)

With the main shelves covered, the next part I want to cover are the titles included inside the glass shelf. This shelf has been with my collection since the beginning and it works well for the regular Blu-rays like my Asian Cinema collection. I managed to get a lot of Japanese and Hong Kong films as well as a couple Korean films this year and I hope to maintain that momentum into 2021. The biggest difference is that 88 Films joins the collection and many out of print Third Window Films releases were able to join also.

There’s also a couple misc. anime, primarily the Studio Canal Ghibli titles, Universal Pictures titles, Viz Media titles, Sony Pictures titles and Warner Bros titles, plus the Twilight Time release of Harlock: Space Pirate. This batch has nothing new added to them.

The new 88 Films additions are:

#09 | Manga

Next we are now on the old bookshelf which, as you may have guessed, is dedicated to the books for the most part. The first few rows have manga from publishers Dark Horse, Kodansha Comics, Square Enix, Yen Press and Viz Media.

Like the Gundam in the main shelves, I am also offering a section dedicated to Junji Ito manga because it makes sense to have them all placed together rather than spread out with the Viz titles.

The big focus was primarily towards Seven Seas & Ghost Ship because they don’t provide better survival rates in terms of stock compared to the other distributors. I have been doing my best but their prices are also more expensive than Viz and Yen etc.

The Viz media box sets are also placed throughout my room, though there’s nothing new added to that part. I am hoping Viz does release a fourth One Piece box set soon.

The new Ghost Ship & Seven Seas manga additions are:

  • Destiny Lovers – Vol. 1
  • Monster Musume – Vol. 4-6
  • Plus-Sized Elf – Vol. 1-5
  • World’s End Harem – Vol. 1-7
  • World’s End Harem: Fantasia – Vol. 1
  • Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs – Vol. 4-8

The new Yen Press manga additions are:

  • Interspecies Reviewers – Vol. 1

The new Viz manga additions are:

  • Junji Ito’s No Longer Human

#10 | Light Novel

Next we have the light novels. This section is a bit of a messy one because I acquired over the years a number of series with only their first volumes, with the exception of ARIFURETA last year. This year I have managed to get a few more volumes than the usual.

The only major changes this time has been with both Seven Seas and Yen Press, as I’ve put the J-Novel Club and Monogatari Vertical stuff on-hold for now.

The new Seven Seas light novel additions are:

  • How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom – Vol. 2-3
  • Monster Girl Doctor – Vol. 1-3

The new Yen On light novel additions are:

  • Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? – Vol. 1
  • The Hero is Overpowered but Overly Cautious – Vol. 2
  • High School DxD – Vol. 1
  • Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? – Vol. 2
  • KonoSuba: God’s Blessing in this Wonderful World! – Vol. 2
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime – Vol. 1

#11 | PC Visual Novels / Misc. Anime (Part 3)

The final part of my collection is the small selection of physical visual novels for PC, as well as a couple anime sets that were sized differently to where they could not fit with the others. The Perfect Blue Ultimate Edition for instance is larger than the NIS America A3-sized sets so this was the only suitable slot at the moment. There’s nothing new with these parts.

And that concludes the eight otaku collection update, also known as the 2020 otaku collection update! 2020 ended up becoming my highest acquired anime haul thanks to various sales and factors in the mix, and I hope I can continue the trend into next year.

Here’s an overall shot of most of the collection:
