Wise Man’s Grandchild (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Wise Man’s Grandchild (賢者の孫, Kenja no Mago) is a 2019 television anime series based on the light novel series written by Tsuyoshi Yoshioka and illustrated by Seiji Kikuchi. The anime was adapted by studio Silver Link and published by Kadokawa Pictures. The series aired during the Spring 2019 anime season in April.

Background:

“A young man dies in a car accident and is reborn in a magical new world. The old, yet wise Merlin finds the boy, names him Shin, raises him from infancy, and teaches him combat and powerful magic along the way. 15 years later, Shin is ready to travel the globe on his own, but Merlin forgot to teach him something major – common sense!”

Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment, May 2020

Yep, another Isekai series. This is a weird one because despite being the usual Isekai overpowered storyline that a lot of other stories have, Wise Man’s Grandchild took a different direction with a number of tropes, for instance the Isekai grandchild are really entertaining and the humour in general is pretty solid. The harem trope goes away fast since the main character already picks someone faster than others have in other titles. The action is not the best but was an overall decent series and one that I do recommend Isekai fans should check out if they want silly fun.

Funimation acquired the English speaking rights for the series and is one of the first shows that Crunchyroll doesn’t have any involvement with in terms of licensing as their partnership concluded, but they did get access for streaming for the subbed version. Funimation dubbed the series during broadcast and have released it on home video for Blu-ray & DVD. Manga Entertainment, as Funimation’s UK branch, brought the series over with both the standard and limited edition sets available.

Limited Edition Contents:

Funimation’s limited editions generally present themselves as a rigid box with an Amaray case and a couple of physical extras, and because Manga Entertainment is now essentially a UK version of the US distributor, the sets are identical or 98% identical.

The main difference for Wise Man’s Grandchild is the artwork on the Amaray case is different and slipcover has been kept with the UK’s limited edition set. In a bizarre move, Manga decided to swap the contents of the physical items so that the artbook is outside the box and the rest are inside. Probably for cost-reasons, but nothing has been removed from the UK version.

Wise Man’s Grandchild comes with a rigid box which includes the main series in an Amaray case (and for the UK a slipcover as mentioned) plus space for the physical items. However, you can only fit either the booklet or the other items which were art cards, bookmarks and a fabric poster.

Manga Entertainment does not disclose the unit allocation for their special editions but the SRP is £64.99.
