Background:

“It’s an exciting age of heroes, where most people develop supernatural abilities known as Quirks. Bright-eyed kids like Izuku Midoriya – Deku for short – dream of the day they become champions of the people. There’s just one little problem standing in Deku’s way. In a world full of heroes, he’s Quirkless. Crushed, but not down for the count, this superhero-fanboy dedicates his time to studying the pros in hopes that he, too, can join a prestigious high school for heroes. In the face of despair, Deku’s courage catches the eye of his ultimate idol, the symbol of justice known as All Might! With special training from the big guy himself, Deku and the talented first-years of the academy may finally have a shot at achieving their dreams. But these amateurs are put to the test of a lifetime when routine training becomes a battle against real villains!”

Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment UK, June 2019.

My Hero Academia doesn’t really need an introduction since pretty much a majority of the anime community and a lot of regular viewers are aware of what the show is. It’s basically Japan’s take on superheroes and it’s an interesting concept overall. The manga is also part of Weekly Shonen Jump’s magazine with weekly chapters and such, like Black Clover, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and One Piece.

Licensing-wise, this was the first major anime to be made available in the UK & Ireland through Funimation Now’s streaming service when it first launched in April 2016. North American distributor Funimation have the UK, IE, US & CA rights for the show with an English simuldub and home video release along the way.

The UK & Ireland had a few complications though, as Funimation decided to partner with Universal Pictures for Season 1’s release which was an overpriced mess of a limited edition. Years later, UK distributor Manga Entertainment and Funimation started to become more friendly to each other (and eventually Funimation bought the distributor) with My Hero Academia joining the distributor for home video. The first season was re-released as a regular Blu-ray & DVD set for a lower SRP than the usual.
