Goblin Slayer (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Goblin Slayer is a 2018 television anime series based on the light novel series written by Kumo Kagyu and illustrated by Noboru Kannatsuki. The anime was adapted by studio White Fox and published by Hakuhodo DY MAP. The series aired during the Autumn 2018 anime season.

Goblin Slayer is not an Isekai series funny enough, it’s a regular dark fantasy series with characters named after D&D class types which is an interesting take to see. A word of caution for those who were interested – the show does feature a scene of sexual violence in the first episode. I know Crunchyroll freaked out over this and added disclaimers all over the series during simulcast when in reality the rest of the series is just tame in comparison to the first episode.

As a result, the UK release is rated 18 uncut by the British Board of Film Classification solely due to the first episode. But once you get past that point, the show is actually pretty fun to watch and I’m looking forward to more Goblin Slayer in the future (at the time of this post they have an OVA special coming soon). I do have the first light novel so I’ll read it sometime.

Goblin Slayer has been acquired by Crunchyroll for the English territories, and Funimation will be distributing the series on their behalf as part of their now-defunct partnership. Funimation dubbed the series during its Japanese broadcast and even managed to bring Brad Hawkins, the motion-capture actor for DOOMslayer from DOOM 2016, as the voice for Goblin Slayer in the dub. Pretty neat inclusion.

Due to the climate of the UK’s currency rate and the fact that Manga Entertainment brought over Funimation’s limited-edition release I decided to go with the UK version. As I ordered it from United Publications I got a good price for the set and it arrived a week earlier than its official 4th November release date.

The limited edition UK version is pretty much almost identical to the US version. The BBFC stickers on the box can easily be removed however the artwork used for the Blu-ray case is based on the standard edition release instead of the limited edition. You will be able to view the limited edition artwork at the end of the booklet included in this set. Like OVERLORD II, the glue dot that holds the info sheet at the backside of the box can be messy so be careful when you remove it.

Released in October 2019, Goblin Slayer from Manga Entertainment contains the entire first season (12 episodes total) across 2 Blu-ray and 2 DVD discs. The audio options available include the main Japanese language with English subtitles and the Funimation English dub. The white subtitles are locked during playback on Blu-ray, and the regions are locked to both B and 2 NTSC respectively.
