The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars (劇場版 魔法科高校の劣等生 星を呼ぶ少女, Gekijōban Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Hoshi o Yobu Shōjo) is a 2017 theatrical anime film based on Tsutomu Satou’s light novel series of the same name with illustrator Kana Ishida. The film was directed by Risako Yoshida and produced by studio Eight Bit, with script writers Munemasa Nakamoto & Tsutomu Satou, character designer Kana Ishida and music composer Taku Iwasaki. The film was first theatrically released in Japanese theatres in June 2017.
Background:
“Tatsuya Shiba will become a legend…
Many months have passed since the Yokohama Disturbance and the massive battle that ensued. Now, the spring season is almost upon them. Tatsuya, the “irregular” elder brother, and Miyuki, his brilliant younger sister, realize that their first year at Magic High School is about to end. The siblings and their friends decide to spend spring break relaxing at a private villa on Ogasawara Island. Tatsuya and the others make the most of their brief vacation until a young girl named Kokoa appears before them. The mysterious young girl who escaped from a naval base tells Tatsuya her one wish.
Join Tatsuya Shiba – the most powerful of them all – as a brand-new saga unfolds with an all-new story written by the original creator, Tsutomu Sato.”
Plot Synopsis via Aniplex of America, July 2018.
The success of the first season of The Irregular at Magic High School lead to Aniplex moving forward with a theatrical anime film, this time using an original story written by the author, but also a different animation studio. I remembered for a while that Madhouse has this weird approach of not bothering to return to produce any sequel seasons for their adaptation projects, which is why you often see continuations passed to different studios, though Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and OVERLORD have been the sole exception to this.
Taking over from studio Madhouse is studio Eight Bit, which production credits include their adaptations for Infinite Stratos and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, the latter of which I’ve watched and has been adapted pretty well from what I’ve read from those who read the source materials. It’s also weird for Aniplex to approach Eight Bit considering they’re not one of their studios.
So as mentioned, The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars is an original theatrical film that doesn’t cover any of the light novel volumes, however it is recommended that you have read up to volume 11 or have watched the second season of the anime (Visitor Arc) before proceeding due to character and plot points that are referenced.
Aniplex of America acquired the English license but only for United States and Canada, and released the film theatrically nationwide before eventually releasing the film onto home video. This is also currently the only anime content that has yet to be dubbed by Aniplex of America, as they went back and provided the first season with an English dub but not for this one.
Limited Edition Contents:

When Aniplex of America released The Irregular at Magic High School The Movie: The Girl Who Summons the Stars, they provided a suitable package for their home video release with a price point that’s nowhere near as hefty as their other releases.
The limited edition Blu-ray release is presented with an o-card slipcase, an Amaray case housing the disc, and four art cards.

The o-card slipcase artwork has information and specs on the back cover. Aniplex are fairly random when it comes to presenting their specs, they either use a o-card strip or just shove them on the back cover. The limited edition Blu-ray set was released for an SRP of $49.98.
I acquired a bundle of The Irregular at Magic High School releases altogether from a private seller for a similar price to what would it cost to purchase them altogether from the Crunchyroll Store (excluding postage).
