Arrow Video returns to the world of Shaw Brothers once again with their fourth instalment of the Shawscope collection. The production company produced thousands of films of various genres, from wuxia and martial arts action, whether set in a historical time or in modern day, all the way to romance, drama, thriller and horror, some of which also landed a Category III rating in Hong Kong which is for adults only.
Many directors and actors began their careers with Shaw Brothers from the late 1950s all the way to the 80s, including King Hu (Come Drink With Me), Lam Nai Choi (Brothers from the Walled City), Chang Cheh (One-Armed Swordsman), Jimmy Wang Yu (Temple of the Red Lotus), Gordon Liu Chia-hui (Five Shaolin Masters), Lo Lieh (Brothers Five) and more.
Because there’s so many films in the company’s line-up, different distributors have been releasing the films bit by bit. Shout Factory have released the most by far over in North America, but others including Arrow have put in extra effort on the quality including the new restorations whenever possible and extra physical goodies. Arrow Video began the Shawscope collection with three volumes released thus far, and now in 2025 we have Shawscope Volume 4.
Shawscope Volume 4 Line-up:
“A LONG TIME AGO, IN A MOVIE STUDIO JUST OFF CLEARWATER BAY….
As special effects-driven horror and sci-fi cinema dominated the global box office in the 1970s, Hong Kong’s mightiest film studio Shaw Brothers not only followed suit but took things one step beyond!
One of Shaws’ most beloved cult classics, Hua Shan’s tokusatsu tribute Super Inframan stars Danny Lee (The Killer) as the titular high-kicking superhero, defending the planet against a demon queen and her legion of subterranean mutant minions. Lee also stars as a monster vigilante issuing vicious justice in Ho Meng-hua’s creeptastic Oily Maniac and as the prince granted magical powers in Pao Hsueh-li’s fantastical wuxia Battle Wizard. Director Ho next treats us to a double-helping of occult mayhem with Black Magic and its sequel, where Ti Lung battles wicked voodoo doctors with the power to cast spells and raise the dead. Four more doses of unhinged madness follow from Kuei Chih-hung in the form of Bewitched and the Hex trilogy, an unforgettable quadruple serving of possession and witchcraft that presaged his notorious brain-melting classic The Boxer’s Omen.
Master filmmaker Chor Yuen adds a hefty dose of horror to his trademark wuxia-mystery style in Bat Without Wings, in which a young sword fighter must end a deranged martial arts master-turned-multiple murderer’s perverted rampage. Hua Shan returns with Bloody Parrot, an eye-poppingly vivid horror fantasy about two swordsmen hunting a demon that offers to grant wishes, only to leave a messy trail of destruction in its wake. Lau Kar-wing’s kung fu jiangshi comedy The Fake Ghost Catchers sees two conmen unwittingly enlisted to battle spirits from the underworld, while Tang Tak-cheung’s hair-raising wuxia fantasia Demon of the Lute has to be seen to be believed. Yang Chuen’s gruesome splatterfest Seeding of a Ghost has a taxi driver enlist a necromancer’s help in avenging the murder of his wife, with sickening results; and Hua Shan returns with Portrait in Crystal, a deliriously imaginative tale of a murderous swordswoman brought to life through a crystal sculpture. Last but not least, Alex Cheung’s Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is an out-of-this-world comedy in which city girl Cherie Chung is abducted by aliens and taken to a galaxy far, far away…
From slimy creatures to supernatural wizardry to sex-crazed serial killers, the biggest collection in Arrow Video’s Shawscope series yet features sixteen of the wildest and weirdest films the company ever made, gorgeously restored in all their gory glory with an amazing array of never-seen-before bonus features.”
Plot Synopsis via Arrow Video, December 2025.
Shawscope is a special collection of films with no specific theme, order, time or reason other than the fact that Arrow Video have secured both the UK, Ireland, US and Canadian rights. Now there is an interesting difference with this volume because we have more license rescues from 88 Films this time around, which may disappoint those who had already owned the long out-of-print Blu-ray releases, but for someone like myself who didn’t grab those releases, this is a great opportunity.

Limited Edition Contents:

The consistency continues but with a new colour! Previous Shawscope box sets have gone for blue, orange and green, but here we have purple.
The Shawscope Volume 4 box set is presented in a rigid large box housing a digibook that contains the Blu-ray discs with illustrated artwork and the contents on each page, and an illustrated 60-page book featuring essays written by David West, Jonathan Clements and Grady Hendrix, as well as cast and crew listings and notes for each film by Ian Jane. There’s also artwork illustrated by Matt Frank, Jolyon Yates, Mike Lee-Graham, Chris Malbon and Ilan Sheady.
While previous releases have included CDs with various music tracks, this is the first volume not to feature any. Instead we have a bonus Blu-ray disc that includes extra on-disc bonus features for various films and a French TV profile called Hong Kong: The Show of Mister Shaw.
The SRP is £169.99 (that’s about £10.62 per film) and has an unspecified print run. Once the print run is out of stock, this edition won’t be available. There’s no word on whether these will receive individual/collection of standard editions like the first volume did but will have to wait and see once this sells out.

I pre-ordered my copy this time around through Terracotta Distribution Store for £124.99 which isn’t cheap but considering the amount of films featured in this set it’s a decent price point.
Physical Contents:
- Rigid Box with clean artwork.
- Digibook packaging.
- Info sheet for specification and BBFC rating details.
- Illustrated 60-page Book with essays written by David West, Jonathan Clements and Grady Hendrix plus notes on each film written by Ian Jane.
