I’m Standing on a Million Lives Seasons 1 & 2 (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

I’m Standing on a Million Lives (100万の命の上に俺は立っている, 100-Man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru), also known as I’m Standing on 1,000,000 Lives, is a 2020-21 television anime series based on Naoki Yamakawa’s manga series of the same name with illustrator Akinari Nao. The series was adapted by studio Maho Film, and the staff credits include director Kumiko Habara, series composition writer Takao Yoshioka, character designers Eri Kojima, Kaho Deguchi and Toshihide Masudate, and music composed by Ken Itō. The anime first aired in Japan across a two-season model, starting from October 2020 followed by its second season in July 2021.

Background:

“Aloof and logical middle school third-year Yusuke Yotsuya is transported to a game-like alternate world. He becomes a third player and takes on a dangerous quest with his classmates Iu Shindo and Kusue Hakozaki, who were transported there earlier. The cold Yusuke eschews emotionalism and examines all elements with detachment, sometimes even toying with the lives of his companions. Can he protect his party from attacking monsters, difficult incidents, and powerful scheming enemies and win the game?”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, December 2025.

When it comes to the isekai genre, there’s always two recurring themes through many of the stories told. Either the characters are summoned to another world and are stuck there, or they were reincarnated to another world and live their lives with a new start. There are only two that I have watched that are changed up the formula a bit when it comes to the summoning premise; I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, Too and I’m Standing on a Million Lives, and the reason why both of these stood out is because the main characters end up back in their world and flip flop at any point. That’s unheard of but a pretty cool idea nonetheless.

I’m Standing on a Million Lives is also a bit of a different beast in itself because the story does have various new ideas that I hadn’t seen before. The fact that each time they end up in the fantasy world they have to approach different tasks by that world’s god, and there’s a special twist each time they run into which I won’t spoil. While many didn’t seem to care that much about this particular isekai anime, especially with the animation quality, I honestly enjoyed my time with it.

The team over at Maho Films also took a pretty bold approach for the second half of the second season by deviating from the source material (which Kodansha Comics have licensed and released in English for those interested) and adapting a different scenario which I believe to be based on a light novel that was released in 2021. So they could adapt more seasons but I think they did this with the expectation that there wouldn’t do any more.

Crunchyroll acquired the license for I’m Standing on a Million Lives during simulcast and also provided an English dub, but this was just before the time where Sony eventually purchased them, so the home video rights were sub-licensed over to Sentai Filmworks in May 2021. However, while most of the anime Sentai acquired eventually made their way onto home video, this series and Noblesse never saw a release, not to mention by that point Funimation rebranded as Crunchyroll. Fast-forward to September 2025, Crunchyroll eventually released the first season on home video with the second season not yet released at the time of this write-up.

Meanwhile, Anime Limited managed to secure the UK & Ireland home video rights to a number of Crunchyroll titles including a good majority of the anime that Sentai Filmworks received which included I’m Standing on a Million Lives. Originally planned to be released in May 2025, the series received numerous delays due to an “admin issue” of sorts – thankfully that got resolved and we finally got the anime available on home video before the year ended, and with both seasons in-tact. My assumption was that they were probably going to use Sentai’s discs and then Crunchyroll got in the way, but we’ll never know the exact cause at this point.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited managed to receive enough materials to produce a collector’s edition set for I’m Standing on a Million Lives which in fact is pretty much the same design as the Japanese Blu-ray release which is a nice touch even if it looks simplistic.

The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, an Amaray case housing the discs, and a 32-page booklet, which includes interviews with the Japanese staff, comments from the author Yukinobu Tatsu, and also two bonus manga chapters not utilised in the Kodansha Comics English manga releases.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £79.99. Also available on the same day is a standard edition.

I pre-ordered the series alongside Bleach Part 5 during Anime Limited’s early bird offer last April for £49.99 (£44.99 with the 10% off Anime Unlimited discount) plus free postage since the other title brought the total cost above the free shipping threshold. Due to the massive delay with this release, it took a lot longer than it should to arrive but it made it before the year wrapped up.

Physical Contents:
