DANDADAN (ダンダダン, Dandadan), also known as DAN DA DAN, is a 2024 television anime series based on Yukinobu Tatsu’s manga series of the same name. The series was adapted by studio Science SARU, and the staff credits include director Fūga Yamashiro, series composition writer Hiroshi Seko, character designer Naoyuki Onda, and music composed by kensuke ushio. The anime first aired in Japan on October 2024.
Background:
“When high schooler Momo, from a family of spirit mediums, first meets her classmate Okarun, an occult geek, they argue – Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts. When it turns out both phenomena are real, Momo awakens a hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse. Together, they must challenge the paranormal forces threatening their world.”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, November 2025.
I never would have anticipated that Science SARU, a studio known for their experimental and unique styles, would end up working on an adaptation of a Weekly Shonen Jump series. Sure they did adapt Devilman Crybaby and will also be adapting The Ghost in the Shell, both of which are seinen manga which is for mature audiences, but never would anyone think a long-running Shonen Jump series like DANDADAN would land with the studio. As a recap, Shonen Jump is where titles like Black Clover, Naruto, One Piece, My Hero Academia and Witch Watch serialised in. But it works, because the anime also shares a very unique but strange idea about ‘what if x and y were both real at the same time?’.
The first time I heard about DANDADAN was the manga and its visual look and premise didn’t exactly grab my attention and I would say it was best compared to how I initially felt with Jujutsu Kaisen, another Shonen Jump series that eventually blew up in popularity thanks to its anime. So the anime was the best way for myself to give the series a chance and I’m glad I did because its a bizarre relatively fast paced rollercoaster of wackiness and at parts rather perverted but without the traditional fanservice that most would expect.
But what really made the anime shine for me was Science SARU’s visual style and music because it’s produced really damn well through both the action scenes and the build-up in-between. Character expressions are also silly just like what they did with Devilman Crybaby and their previous works, but nothing here to me felt like it was half-baked or rushed out of the gate. Everything across both seasons to me was done with a lot of care and attention.
Since TOHO acquired North American distributor GKIDS, they were able to secure the rights to DANDADAN for streaming and home video. It was also the rare occasion where both Crunchyroll and Netflix simulcasted the series with the English dub also, though I remember reading that Crunchyroll didn’t want to promote it as much because they weren’t able to license the series. Either way, it didn’t stop the series from becoming more popular. Anime Limited were eventually able to secure the UK & Ireland home video rights around the same time that GKIDS ran the special theatrical screenings of the show’s first few episodes.
Collector’s Edition Contents:

DANDADAN Season 1 was released pretty quickly by GKIDS with its own collector’s edition while Anime Limited took a lot longer to release theirs. But it’s still a neat set, but we have two variations. The more accessible version is the Yokai Edition, which is what I went for, featured Okarun, Turbo Granny, Aira, and Jiji on the cover, while the Store Exclusive version is the Alien Edition, featuring Momo, Turbo Granny, Seiko, and aliens on the cover.
Both are pretty much identical in content otherwise. The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box with an o-card glow in the dark slipcase, a Scanavo case housing the discs, a 32-page booklet, A3-sized double-sided poster and a sticker sheet. The booklet includes character designs, key visuals and discussions with the staff of the series.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £69.99. Also available on the same day is a standard edition.
I pre-ordered the series alongside Bleach Part 9 during Anime Limited’s early bird offer last September for £39.99 (£35.99 with the 10% off Anime Unlimited discount) plus free postage since the other title brought the total cost above the free shipping threshold.
Physical Contents:
- Rigid Box with clean artwork and glow in the dark o-card slipcase
- Scanavo case packaging
- Info sheet for specification and BBFC description
- 32-page Booklet
- Double-sided A3 Poster
- Sticker Sheet
On-Disc Contents:
Distributor: Anime Limited
Released: 17th November 2025
The collector’s edition Blu-ray release for DANDADAN Season 1 contains all 12 episodes across two Blu-ray discs, with the encode and authoring done by GKIDS via their June 2025 release.
The set include both the original Japanese audio with English subtitles and the Bang Zoom! English dub commissioned by GKIDS with English for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing subtitles also available.
The white subtitles are unlockable during playback, and the Blu-ray discs are region restricted to players set to B.
A couple extra notes regarding the discs for this release (as well as the GKIDS North American version which are identical in content). The opening and ending credits both use the English text version instead of the Japanese version, plus GKIDS didn’t provide the traditional chapter mark setup that you often get with majority of anime releases, so if you wanted to skip the opening credits you will end up at a random point in the middle of the episode.
