Call of the Night Season 1 (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Call of the Night (よふかしのうた, Yofukashi no Uta) is a 2022 television anime series based on Kotoyama’s manga series of the same name. The series was adapted by studio LIDEN FILMS, and the staff credits include chief director Tetsuya Miyanishi, director Tomoyuki Itamura, series composition writer Michiko Yokote, character designer Haruka Sagawa, and music composed by Yoshiaki Dewa. The anime first aired in Japan on July 2022.

Background:

“After being bitten by the vampire Nazuna while wandering late at night, insomniac student Ko Yamori unhappily learns that he’s NOT becoming a vampire himself. Apparently, if you’re bitten by a vampire that you’re not in love with, you just get a bloodthirsty friend instead of a supernatural blood connection. But being vamped is one of the few things to ever intrigue Ko, so he makes it his goal to fall in love with Nazuna.

Of course, Ko’s friends aren’t thrilled with his new vampiric ambitions, and it’s not even clear if Nazuna will bite on the offer should Ko try to answer the CALL OF THE NIGHT!”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, November 2025.

A blind buy purchase this time from the latest arrivals but one that I am also well aware of its popularity in recent years. Call of the Night is a romance comedy series but also a vampire show. I’m aware that anime have introduced vampires numerous times, but this show’s premise is the first that I’ve seen where our main lead doesn’t become one after being bitten and also wants to be a vampire at the same time. Strange idea but it works. I should also mention the manga was also written and drawn by the creator of Dagashi Kashi, which is another series that I never got around to checking out but the author’s art style is pretty cool and had always intrigued me.

So this adaptation had received a lot of attention before it aired and with a second season already released it’s one of the more popular shows of the past few years. Part of the reason I never got the chance to watch it during simulcast is due to the fact that HIDIVE had exclusivity rights thanks to Sentai Filmworks, though it was eventually made available on Netflix but by that point I would rather watch it on home video.

LIDEN FILMS animated the series and their track record is pretty hit or miss but I have enjoyed their attempts on The Heroic Legend of Arslan and the 2D portions for Berserk at least. This series also has the director behind many of the Monogatari adaptations which is huge as those were really good on the visuals and storytelling. Also I hadn’t realised this by Creepy Nuts, the duo that went viral thanks to Mashle & DANDADAN, did the theme song for this series which is neat.

As previously mentioned, Sentai Filmworks secured the streaming and home video rights for Call of the Night as well as its second season later down the line. HIDIVE handled the simulcast and the two also produced an English dub. The series was released on home video followed by a premium edition much later down the line, but over here in the United Kingdom Anime Limited announced they secured the UK home video rights at MCM London Comic Con in May 2025. Unlike The Dangers in My Heart which was announced at the same panel, they only revealed the first season for the time being. The UK release was initially delayed to January 2026 but stock arrived on time for its November release date.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

We got pretty lucky here because by the time Anime Limited picked up the license for Call of the Night, Sentai eventually released a premium edition. Any sooner we wouldn’t have had much in terms of the package.

The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, a Scanavo case housing the discs, a 68-page booklet, and 6 double-sided art cards. The booklet, which is the same one used in Sentai’s premium edition release, includes character designs, episode breakdowns, and interviews and discussions with the Japanese staff and Creepy Nuts.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £69.99. Also available on the same day is a standard edition.

I pre-ordered the series alongside Cyberpunk: Edgerunners during Anime Limited’s early bird offer last early October for £39.99 (£35.99 with the 10% off Anime Unlimited discount) plus free postage since the other title brought the total cost above the free shipping threshold.
