Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Parts 1 & 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Mushoku Tensei II: Jobless Reincarnation (無職転生 II 〜異世界行ったら本気だす〜Mushoku Tensei II – Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) is a 2023-24 television anime series based on Rifujin na Magonote’s light novel series of the same name. The series was adapted by studio Bind, and the staff credits include directors Hiroki Hirano (Eps 24-36) & Ryōsuke Shibuya (Eps 37-48), series composition writer Toshiya Ono, character designers Sanae Shimada & Yoshiko Saitō, and music composer Yoshiaki Fujisawa. The anime first aired in Japan across a split-cour model, starting from July 2023 followed by its second cour in April 2024.

Note: While I don’t delve too much into the content of the second season’s story, the artwork shown in this unboxing will contain visual spoilers to the second half of the season so I recommend holding off on viewing this post until you’ve seen the show first.

Background:

“After Eris’ departure, Rudy wallows in depression until he rediscovers his purpose in the heat of battle and returns to life as an adventurer. Tales of his exploits earn him an invite to Ranoa University of Magic, where a former friend studies in disguise.”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll UK, October 2024.

It took a while but we finally see the return of Mushoku Tensei! While the light novels concluded a few years ago (and the English translated releases finished a year ago), the anime adaptation had only just started and even though studio Bind took their time, we still ended up with a really solid season. The anime so far has been successful and I remember the studio wants to adapt the whole story from what was said back during the first season’s production.

In fact, a third season was announced as soon as the second season concluded which is awesome, though the studio has other projects to work their way through first, like recently they just released Ruri Rocks which also went viral on social media like Mushoku Tensei and ONIMAI did previously. Studio Bind have produced great quality animation to their shows and the second season was pretty consistent throughout (with any amendments sorted on the Blu-rays).

During the first season of Mushoku Tensei, we followed Rudy from when he was an infant to a young boy surviving the fantasy world after his family was split up. Now in this second season, we continue to follow Rudy from a young boy to a young adult studying at a school, and I think this season stepped up a lot on a lot of the story arcs and characters introduced. There’s also some subplots that were pretty interesting to explore like Rudy dealing with a certain condition after what happened in the first season, and of course romance and building a family. After what’s happened in this season, I’m very interested to see what comes next.

For the novel readers, the anime adapts the Adolescence story arcs, which were from the seventh novel volume all the way to the thirteenth novel. So by this point we’re pretty much at the halfway point of the novel’s content but there’s probably enough to cover at least a couple more seasons before it wraps up.

Crunchyroll picked up the license for simulcast and home video, taking over from Funimation who had the first season, since the two distributors merged together due to Sony’s acquisition of Crunchyroll. An English dub was also produced during simulcast and thus we saw a release for the United States and United Kingdom on Blu-ray, though split into two parts which were spaced out roughly a year apart due to the show’s split-cour model.

Part 2 Limited Edition Contents:

Mushoku Tensei is very popular and at least Crunchyroll remains committed to keeping it consistent for the second season’s release, given other shows have lost their limited edition offering after a season or two. As this is a second-cour’s worth of content, the series was released in two parts. Part 1 is a regular release, whilst Part 2 offers a limited edition that we’re looking at here. Part 1 will also fit inside the limited edition’s box set. I also have the UK version of the releases so we don’t have the DVDs with ours which will have characters on the disc artwork.

The limited edition release is presented with a rigid box, an Amaray case with an o-card slipcase housing the discs, an 120-page artbook, and 8 art cards. The artwork on the case is the same for the standard edition. The artbook includes character designs, monster designs and information about each one plus background artwork and interviews with the staff, voice cast and musicians who worked on the theme songs.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll UK releases. The Part 2 limited edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £69.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £44.99.

I was able to order the Part 1 release from Amazon UK with its o-card slipcase intact for £28 and the Part 2 limited edition release from MVM’s Anime-on-line store for £52.49, both with free shipping and ordered last minute.
