Carole & Tuesday (キャロル&チューズデイ) is a 2019 original television anime series directed by Motonobu Hori, created, chief directed & written by Shinichirō Watanabe, and produced by studio Bones. Staff credits also include screenplay writers Deko Akao, Keiko Nobumoto, Kimiko Ueno, Yasuhiro Nakanishi & Yuuichi Nomura, original character designer Eisaku Kubonouchi, character designer, Tsunenori Saitō, and music composed by Mocky. The series broadcasted in Japan on April 2019.

Background:

“It’s not easy being an orphaned refugee, especially when you’re not on the planet where you were born, but Carole Stanley still has big ambitions. However, while she dreams of forging a career in music, something isn’t quite right yet. There’s a spark that’s missing. Tuesday Simmons has lived a life of comfort, so no one expects it when the shy young woman suddenly runs off to another city, taking little more than her beloved guitar and a need to perform with her.

When they meet, Tuesday’s spark ignites Carole’s fire, and their musical ambitions begin burning anew. Achieving their dreams will be hard in a world where music is created by AIs, but if they don’t give up, soon all the worlds will know the names CAROLE AND TUESDAY!”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, October 2025.

Shinichirō Watanabe has had a pretty impressive line-up of works throughout the past 30 years working in anime, and I’ve seen a good majority of them. Cowboy Bebop was one of the first that I had watched which was the same for many, and while Samurai Champloo had some pacing issues it had a cool concept overall. My personal favourite is probably Terror in Resonance because of the soundtrack and vibe but I also appreciated both Macross Plus and Space Dandy. Surprisingly I have yet to watch Kids on the Slope which I do own but I recall that was also received pretty well with its 60s setting and music theme.

Which brings us to his next work five years after Terror in Resonance with Carole & Tuesday alongside studio Bones, the animation studio behind Eureka Seven, and director Motonobu Hori, who has contributed to a number of anime projects but has directed Super Crooks for Netflix as well as the upcoming MARRIAGETOXIN anime series with studio Bones Film, the spin-off company of Bones who animated My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Carole & Tuesday was also part of Fuji Creative Corporation’s second programming block +ULTRA which landed a deal with Netflix for streaming outside Asia, and that led to delays in distribution so while it was broadcasted in Japan the rest of the world didn’t get a chance until months later. +ULTRA was also the reason why BEASTARS ended up on Netflix as well for those wondering (which eventually became a streaming exclusive in general after the programming block deal concluded and joined Crunchyroll later down the line).

Because it was on Netflix and was made available late, I never got around to checking out the series which had a pretty diverse appeal in the production process. I knew that Shinichirō Watanabe was a fan of music from around the world (Cowboy Bebop featured music references in its episode titles, Samurai Champloo went with a hip-hop vibe for its score despite set in a historical period, and Terror in Resonance featured Iceland music in its soundtrack), but here we have various artists from around the world. Canadian singer & songwriter Mocky worked on the score and joining him includes Japanese pop band Cero, Australian DJ Alison Wonderland, Filipino/American electronic pop artist Mark Redito, and DJ & rapper Flying Lotus, beatboxer Taylor McFerrin, and R&B singer Thundercat from America.

Since Netflix had exclusivity with streaming also meant they produced the English dub and dubs for other languages for the series. Previous Shinichirō Watanabe titles have had really strong English dubs with Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus and Space Dandy being highlights for me. There is a lot of singing in this series which was done by a separate person in both Japanese & English tracks (not sure about the European dubs) but from what has been said the English dub for this series is also pretty good which is great. Now Netflix is notorious for charging a lot for their dubs when it comes to home video, but miraculously the English dub for Carole & Tuesday did manage to make its way onto home video through distributor Sentai Filmworks who secured the North American rights in September 2022.

The UK didn’t get a chance to own the series on home video until a few years later, with distributor Anime Limited announcing the home video rights at an MCM London Comic Con convention in May 2025.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

We have a pretty lucky situation here. Because it had taken so long to bring Carole & Tuesday over to the UK, Sentai Filmworks eventually released a premium edition box set that came with a fancy book alongside other things, and Anime Limited were able to secure that exact book for this release.

The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, a digipack case housing the three discs, an 168-page booklet, and a double-sided A3-sized poster. The booklet includes pretty much everything that was featured in the Sentai Filmworks release which includes character information, episode guide, interviews with the staff and musicians, background artwork, storyboard designs, and notes about the series in general. It’s very word-heavy but great for fans of the series.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £79.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £44.99.

I pre-ordered my copy from Anime Limited’s online store for £49.99 during its early bird (plus 10% discount from Anime Unlimited membership).
