Komada: A Whisky Family (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Komada: A Whisky Family (駒田蒸留所へようこそ, Komada Jōryūjo e Yōkoso) is a 2023 original theatrical anime film directed by Masayuki Yoshihara and produced by studio P.A. Works. Staff credits also include screenplay writers Munemasa Nakamoto and Yukito Kizawa, original character designer Tomomi Takada, character designer Kōsuke Kawazura, and music composed by Tatsuya Katō. The film was theatrically released in Japan on November 2023.

Background:

“Kotaro, a novice editor for a web news, visits Komada Distillery for a project on Japanese craft whisky. Led by a young female president Rui who recently took over the family business, the distillery works hard to reproduce its signature whisky KOMA they had to stop making years ago. KOMA was a brand that Rui’s family had lovingly preserved and a symbol of happiness for all. However, not to mention financial backing, too many clues are missing to revive the whisky once lost. Rui, Kotaro, and the distillery supporters pull together every thread to bring back the whisky filled with family memories.”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, October 2025.

When it comes to anime I found P.A. Works to be interesting but niche in their appeal. They have worked on various genres, but in most cases they tend to do their own original stories whilst still relevant to Japanese culture. The ones that I did watch from them were pretty solid (A Lull in the Sea, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms) and I know a few folks are massive fans of some of the shows they’ve animated.

The studio eventually came up with a new line-up of anime focused on working people in various careers, some of which you may be familiar with already; Hanasaku Iroha (Hot Springs Inn), Shirobako (Anime Production), Sakura Quest (Tourism), and The aquatope on white sand (Aquarium). Now we have a new anime joining the roster, Komada: A Whisky Family, and it’s focused on Whisky production, but rather than being produced as a series it’s a theatrical film instead.

The film pretty much appeared with little fanfare outside of Japan, mostly likely due to lack of licensors considering its a film and not streaming like the others did, though it did make an appearance at various film festivals including Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, the same year the film theatrically released in Japanese theaters.

Komada: A Whisky Family was revealed to have been licensed by Anime Limited during the MCM London Comic Con panel in May 2024 for a theatrical release followed by home video, though outside of film festivals I don’t recall ever seeing any big news about the film being released across various cinema chains between then and now. The film to my recollection has yet to be licensed by a US distributor either.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

As Anime Limited like to provide collector’s editions to most of the films they release, Komada: A Whisky Family also received the same treatment especially considering this has yet to receive a release in other English territories.

The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, a Scanavo case housing the disc, an 8-page booklet, 3 art cards and an A3-sized poster. The booklet includes character information and more about the world of the film.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed (but is expected to be the usual 1000 run) for an SRP of £39.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £19.99.

I pre-ordered my copy from Anime Limited’s online store for £24.99 during its early bird (plus 10% discount from Anime Unlimited membership) alongside BLEACH Part 8 to save on shipping costs.
