Eureka: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution (EUREKA/交響詩篇エウレカセブン ハイエボリューション, Koukyoushihen Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution 3: Eureka) is a 2021 original theatrical anime film directed by Hisatoshi Shimizu, produced by studio Bones, and is a continuation to the Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution film series after 2018’s Anemone. Staff credits also include chief director Tomoki Kyoda, screenplay writers Dai Satō, Tomoki Kyoda and Yuuichi Nomura, character designers Kenichi Yoshida and Masashi Okumura, and music composed by Naoki Satō. The film was theatrically released in Japan on November 2021.
Background:
“Eureka has lived alone in atonement for ten years, hated by the world and blamed for the chaos that destroyed everything. In a fateful encounter, she receives an order to protect Iris, a new “Eureka,” who has the ability to produce Scab Corals. It’s a fateful meeting between the former Eureka, who has lost her powers, and Iris, who fears her powers. When Eureka is asked to put her life on the line as a new crisis arises, will Eureka have the strength to protect Iris and the world? What future awaits her at the end of her journey?”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, September 2025.
Almost a decade ago, studio Bones announced a new series of films for the Eureka Seven franchise and it was pretty exciting considering the original series was a lot of fun and had some great storytelling. The franchise did have a rocky approach with Eureka Seven AO going into some strange directions midway through the series and there was also a theatrical film Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers which I haven’t seen but apparently went into a different direction and such.
So with the Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution trilogy I went in with similar expectations to Studio Khara’s Rebuild of Evangelion which was introducing a new story with the current animation designs. What we got instead is a weird mismatch that pretty much felt like a parallel to the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy. The first film was a compilation of one story arc that focused on Renton distancing himself from the rest of the cew. The second film went for a brand new original story with Anemone as the protagonist which was very good. And now with the third film, we have Eureka in the spotlight but it’s also a different story in itself which I haven’t seen yet and I hope it sticks the landing considering the reception was pretty mixed.
It’s strange that this trilogy has gone into this spiral but I suppose the production was impacted by COVID as the first two were released before 2020 and the third film released in 2021, which probably led to some rewrites and switch ups with the direction, especially considering studio Bones does have other projects to deal with like Bungo Stray Dogs, Mob Psycho 100 and My Hero Academia at the time.
Anime Limited and Funimation both secured the theatrical and home video rights for the Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution trilogy when the project was first officially revealed which was around 2018, which was handy because it didn’t mean the distributors had to renegotiate for each film every time, though they do have to wait a while for the masters etc. The trilogy never got the proper theatrical treatment though they did show up for film festivals like Screen Anime and Scotland Loves Anime here in the UK. At least Funimation produced the English dub and brought back the cast for each of the films, with Crunchyroll taking over the rights for US & Canada due to the merger.
Crunchyroll released Eureka: Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution back in the start of 2024 and Anime Limited were also going to do the same, but they ran into some issues with the approvals regarding their collector’s edition release which was originally going to feature a storyboard book of the film. Considering it took this long to be released, the distributor had no choice but to scrap the book and give it something else so that it’s out of their system.
Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited released collector’s editions for the first two Eureka Seven Hi-Evolution films so they went with consistency even if it meant they lost the storyboard book that was supposed to be included here.
The collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid box, a Scanavo case housing the disc, four art cards and a poster.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. I pre-ordered my copy from Anime Limited’s online store for £24.99 during its early bird (plus 10% discount from Anime Unlimited membership) with £3.50 postage.
