Psycho-Pass Providence (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Psycho-Pass Providence (劇場版 サイコパス PROVIDENCE) is a 2023 original theatrical anime film directed by Naoyoshi Shiotani and produced by Production I.G. Staff credits also include screenplay writers Makoto Fukami & Tow Ubukata, character designer Naoyuki Onda with original character designer Akira Amano, and music composed by Yūgo Kanno. The film was theatrically released in May 2023 for Japan.

Background:

“In the year 2118, Japan is on the brink of giving the Sibyl System total control of their criminal justice. So when a professor studying the system’s future effects is murdered, Akane teams up with Kogami to hunt down the research before the killers do.”

Plot Synopsis via Crunchyroll UK, December 2024.

It’s been thirteen years since Psycho-Pass first aired in Japan and became a pretty strong IP for Production I.G, especially with its premise which does remind me of Minority Report looking back at it. The franchise received tons of instalments; three seasons and multiple films over the course of a decade, though they were pretty scattered.

Funimation (then Crunchyroll after the companies merged) have the rights for the first two seasons and the first film, simply known as Psycho-Pass: The Movie, then Amazon Prime stepped in and held exclusivity on the streaming rights for the third season and its follow-up film Psycho Pass 3: First Inspector. Around the same time, the three-part film series Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System came out and while Crunchyroll managed to include the films on their streaming platform, they have yet to be released on home video.

The first time I checked out Psycho-Pass was with Funimation’s Premium Edition Blu-ray release, one of their first proper limited editions, and I really enjoyed the show especially with its storyline. The second season I also enjoyed despite its backlash and the first film I was lukewarm on and pretty much put me off from the franchise. That is until I checked out Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System during Anime Limited’s Screen Anime festival and was surprised by how much I enjoyed those films. Now I have yet to watch Season 3 but I do have Amazon Prime to check them out eventually.

Now we have Psycho Pass Providence, the latest film in the franchise and brings back the main characters Akane and Kogami once again for another mission. Psycho-Pass is not a series that you can just jump right in the middle of an instalment to be honest, but it’s good to see the franchise is still bringing in new stories. Crunchyroll picked up the theatrical and home video rights to the film for the same regions as their previous licenses; the United States and the United Kingdom (they also have Sinners of the System but for US only as Anime Limited managed to secure the UK rights first).

Limited Edition Contents:

Psycho Pass Providence, despite being a film, received the limited edition treatment by Crunchyroll that fits in line with the first two season releases which came as a surprise, especially considering the first film didn’t get this treatment from them.

The limited edition release is presented with a rigid slipcase containing an Amaray case with an o-card sleeve to house the Blu-ray disc, and alongside the case includes an 60-page artbook that includes character designs, background artwork and interviews with the Japanese staff.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Crunchyroll releases. The limited edition Blu-ray has an unspecified number of units printed for an SRP of £34.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £19.99.

My copy was included as part of a Birthday haul so I didn’t pay for it in this instance.
