Crime Story (Deluxe Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray) Unboxing

Crime Story (重案組) is an 1993 live-action theatrical Hong Kong film directed by Kirk Wong, and produced by Chua Lam with distribution by Golden Harvest. The film starred Jackie Chan, Kent Cheng, Law Kar-ying and Blackie Ko, with writers Chun Tin Nam, Chan Man Keung, Chan Lai Lin, Cheung Chi Shing and Teddy Chan, and music composed by Mark Lui & James Wong. The film was theatrically released in June 1993 for Hong Kong.

Background:

“Troubled Hong Kong CID inspector Eddie Chan (Jackie Chan) is assigned to oversee the safety of controversial businessman Wong Yat-Fei (Law Kar-Ying), who is then kidnapped. A major investigation is launched and leads to Taipei and back to Hong Kong but, unbeknownst to Chan – his new partner, Inspector Hung (Kent Cheng) is an accomplice to the crime, throwing the authorities off the trail.”

Plot Synopsis via 88 Films, June 2025.

Police Story was the first Jackie Chan Hong Kong film I watched and really enjoyed the action/stunts and the story, so it was no surprise that it spawned more sequels. And then we land on Crime Story which isn’t technically related to Police Story in general but shares some similarities in terms of Jackie’s character being on the police force and the stunts involved. Unlike Police Story, Crime Story is more serious and it even managed to receive a Category III rating by the Hong Kong rating board, though from what I have read online it was downgraded to Category IIB later down the line.

Crime Story did manage to receive a release in the United States from Dimension Films in 2000 and in the United Kingdom from Columbia/Tri-Star in 1995, both regions had numerous re-releases across different distributors. The US having Dragon Dynasty on DVD in 2007 and Shout! Factory on Blu-ray in 2013, and the UK having Hong Kong Legends on DVD in 2003 before finally landing with 88 Films on Blu-ray in 2019.

The 88 Films release was one of the first titles where they put in more effort on the disc authoring and packaging, and from there their reputation grew as more and more Asian films were picked up. The Blu-ray release did well enough to be reprinted to have Kung Fu Bob’s artwork as the main cover art for the standard edition which initially used a poster artwork. Now in 2025, Crime Story joins the 4K Ultra HD format with a new restoration.

Deluxe Collector’s Edition Contents:

I have no clue what determines a ‘deluxe collector’s edition’ or a ‘deluxe limited edition’ for 88 Films at this point, but Crime Story also got that new treatment, which is packaging similarly to Armour of God II: Operation Condor and Miracles: The Canton Godfather. As mentioned, the film previously received a first print edition when 88 Films first released the Blu-ray but here we have new artwork and content.

This deluxe collector’s edition release is presented with a rigid slipcase containing a 4K amaray case housing the discs and 6 Lobby Card Reproductions, a double-sided poster and an 80-page illustrated booklet featuring two new write-ups. The articles covered are ‘A Perfect Crime, An Imperfect Story: Crime Story – The Police Story Sequel that Should have Been’ by Paul Bramhall, ‘Working With Jackie: An interview with actor and director Jamie Luk’ by Matthew Edwards, and ‘Hong Kong Blues: The Real Crime Story’ by C.J. Lines.

The box art is clean with no ratings/information on all sides, with a sheet to cover the synopsis, information about the release and any ratings and specs. The artwork on the Amaray cases (both covers) do include information and specs on the back but there’s no BBFC logos. The deluxe collector’s edition 4K Ultra HD release retailed for £34.99 SRP, and while the previously released Blu-ray from a years ago is still available, a new version is also being made available. A standard edition 4K Ultra HD release will likely appear once this deluxe limited edition sells out.

I pre-ordered this alongside another Jackie Chan 4K release from the Terracotta store.
