Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Love Live! Superstar!! (ラブライブ!スーパースター!!, Rabu Raibu! Sūpāsutā!!) Season 2 is a 2022 television anime series that’s part of a multimedia project between Kadokawa, Lantis and studio Sunrise and the second season to the 2021 anime series. The television series is directed by Takahiko Kyogoku and produced by studio Sunrise (now known as Bandai Namco Filmworks). Staff credits also include writer Jukki Hanada, original character designer Yūhei Murota, character designer Atsushi Saitō and music composed by Yoshiaki Fujisawa. The second season first aired in Japan on July 2022.

Background:

“A new school year has begun at Yuigaoka Girls’ High School. Liella! is practicing up on the roof as usual, and a new student named Kinako Sakurakoji is drawn in by their voices. She ends up sneaking into the school to quietly watch them train…. a decision that is going to change the future of both Kinako and Liella!”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, January 2025.

We have reached a point where I can’t keep repeating myself about how massive Love Live! has been for Sunrise over the past decade. But what I find interesting is that out of the various idol groups, Love Live! Superstar!! is currently the only one to reach a third season and has yet to receive a theatrical film of its own. The others tend to stick to two seasons with a film to conclude their story.

The anime’s first season started off with five idol members for the Liella! group; Kanon Shibuya, Keke Tang, Chisato Arashi, Sumire Heanna, and Ren Hazuki, which differed from the rest of the franchise because the others generally had bigger groups. Now in this second season, the number has grown to nine members with Kinako Sakurakōji, Mei Yoneme, Shiki Wakana, and Natsumi Onitsuka joining the roster.

Love Live! Superstar!! was licensed in the UK & Ireland by Anime Limited, who have also picked up most of the franchise released in the past decade (with the exception for Love Live! School Idol Project which was with MVM Entertainment). Unfortunately the franchise in recent years for streaming has been poorly mishandled, with no proper legal streams whatsoever leading to fans either going into piracy or having to wait for a home video release.

Crunchyroll have the US & Canada rights but because of how massive they have become with their licensing catalog, Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 has yet to be released on home video and more importantly, they haven’t even begun or have any interest in producing an English dub at all. As a result of this, similarly to Yohane the Parhelion: Sunshine in the Mirror, Anime Limited have decided to jump the gun and release the series subtitled only on home video.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 kept its consistency with its first season for the collector’s treatment which is good, but there’s not much on offer for its price.

This release is presented with a rigid box containing a Scanavo case to house the Blu-ray discs, and alongside the case is an 8-page booklet, featuring interviews with the Japanese cast and ending credit illustrations.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has 1000 units printed for an SRP of £69.99, with a standard edition Blu-ray available for retailers at an SRP of £39.99.

The series was included as part of their January 2025 early bird pre-order range on their AllTheAnime online store where I ordered from. The set was on offer for £39.99 + £3.50 postage, with the Anime Unlimited membership lowering the cost down to £35.99 + £3.50 postage (totalling £39.49).

Distributor: Anime Limited
Released: 20th January 2025

The collector’s edition release for Love Live! Superstar!! Season 2 contains the complete season, episodes 1-12, across two Blu-ray discs. Both discs have been authored and encoded by Com’ On Screen, the infamous French company who mainly works with Anime Limited’s French branch.

You have the option to choose between English & French menu text at the start and can switch back and forth without having to reset the player. Crunchyroll has yet to produce an English dub for the series so you can consider this as Anime Limited jumping the gun once again. As such, the only audio option available here is Japanese with English & French subtitles. French’s subtitle options are tied to the French menu, while English’s subtitle options are locked to the English menu.

The white subtitles for the English & French translations are locked during playback, and the discs are region locked to players set to B.

Before ordering this, I was made aware by posts from the French anime community that Com’ On Screen botched the authoring process for the series, with the video presentation having incorrect colours alongside the usual macro blocking (like banding but in mini-blocks that you can see in motion) that you tend to get from them. It is disappointing that a big franchise such as Love Live! had been treated this way. Personally I went for the collector’s set just to remain consistent with the rest of the franchise, so hopefully the authoring for future titles that use this company gets sorted before they release the third season (or in fact hopefully Crunchyroll dubs the second & third season, and make Anime Limited re-release the seasons to ditch these discs).

Also to note, both the Bonus Animation “Liella’s Song” and trailers that are on this release do not include any subtitles.
