“Deiji” Meets Girl (でーじミーツガール), also known as Deji Meets Girl, is a 2021 original television anime series directed by Ushio Tazawa, and produced by studio LIDEN FILMS. Staff credits also include series composition writer and original character designer Akane Malbeni, character designer Ushio Tazawa, and music composer Hiroshi Nakamura. The series first aired in Japan on October 2021.
Background:
“Maise is stuck spending the summer after her first-year of high school helping out at her family’s hotel in a sleepy seaside town, but things become a little less sleepy once Ichiro, a mysterious young man, checks into the hotel. It seems as if only Maise and Ichiro can see the strange, sudden apparitions: the hotel lobby and the room transforming into an aquarium, a giant tree erupting from the floor or the rowdy monsters laying claim to the hotel restaurant. Maise vows to figure out not just what’s causing these odd occurrences but why Ichiro has come to this remote town in the first place.”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, October 2023.
I have enjoyed a number of works by LIDEN FILMS but I don’t really watch short anime form content given the reception is often not as popular as other types of anime. “Deiji” Meets Girl aired in Japan as part of the Autumn 2021 anime season via the MBS Super Animeism programming block, but wasn’t picked up for streaming which is odd given the studio and art style would fit in line for a platform like Crunchyroll.
And then out of nowhere in April 2022, “Deiji” Meets Girl was picked up by GKIDS for a double bill type release with a different film by the same studio called Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko for theatrical screens, and Anime Limited followed the same suit over here. The difference between the two distributors is that Anime Limited decided to also release the short series on home video and in its own special collector’s set.
I honestly would have thought that both distributors would include the series with Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko but that didn’t turn out to be the same. Either way, I do think its neat to see such as obscure niche short series of sorts receive a home video release, though at the same time it is a risky approach.
Collector’s Edition Contents:
Despite its rather short length, Anime Limited decided to produce a collector’s edition for “Deiji” Meets Girl.
This edition is presented with a rigid box containing a Scanavo case to house the disc. Alongside the case is a 16-page booklet, containing character designs and a brief episode title list.
The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray parts are 1000 units each printed for an SRP of £39.99. A standard edition Blu-ray was also released not long after this edition.
The collector’s edition Blu-ray was made available to order directly through Anime Limited’s online store as an early bird during the month of October, on offer for £24.99 (with the Anime Unlimited membership lowering the cost down to £22.49). However, I decided to hold off and eventually it was included in the August 2024 Summer Sale for £19.99 (£17 with a 15% Summer sale discount offer) which is where I received my copy of the set.
