One Punch Man Season 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

One Punch Man (ワンパンマン) Season 2, also written as One-Punch Man, is a 2019 television anime series based on ONE’s manga series of the same name with illustrator Yūsuke Murata. The second season was adapted by studio J.C.Staff, and the staff credits include director Chikara Sakurai, series composition writer Tomohiro Suzuki, character designer Chikashi Kubota, and music composed by Makoto Miyazaki. The season first aired in Japan on April 2019.

Background:

“Saitama begins his official duties as a professional hero, but the doomsday prophecy of Shibabawa appears to be coming true as the frequency of monster attacks surges. In the midst of the crisis, the “hero hunter” Garou makes his own appearance. Is Earth doomed, or will Saitama save the day with one punch?”

Plot Synopsis via Funimation UK, September 2021.

One Punch Man has been one of the most popular manga titles of the past decade thanks to its concept but also the artwork that Eyeshield 21 illustrator Yūsuke Murata drew throughout this revised version of the story. As most will know already, ONE’s artwork stands out in a specific way to say and I can see why having a different illustrator to tackle the drawings for the public was the way to go. Regardless I really like his designs for his other series Mob Psycho 100.

One Punch Man spiked up in popularity primarily due to the western audience from what I can see, especially when studio Madhouse were chosen to adapt the first season which did super well, and in a rare case was streamed on the Daisuki streaming service to a large number of territories, which is how I was able to watch it. Sadly Daisuki isn’t around anymore but the anime managed to receive a second season, though studio Madhouse did not get involved. Taking over were studio J.C.Staff, known for DanMachi and A Certain Scientific Railgun, and let’s just say the fandom did not take the end result well.

It was clear the animation was never going to be as well done as the first season, and with that mindset going in I honestly had a good time watching this second season. The story arc clearly wasn’t finished but thankfully a third season is in the works with the same studio which will likely wrap it up.

With most of the big titles getting picked up by Crunchyroll, Viz Media were the ones who secured the streaming and home video rights for both seasons of the anime, with the UK/European rights sorted out by Viz Media Europe. In the UK, the first season was distributed by KAZE UK before eventually being re-released by Manga Entertainment just before they were bought by Funimation. The second season skipped KAZE UK as that branch finally folded and the distribution was then handled by Funimation UK.

Limited Edition Contents:

Funimation UK were doing their best to provide proper limited edition releases to match what the US distributors were doing. For One Punch Man Season 2 they were able to release their own variation of Viz Media’s edition with some adjustments to the rigid box design.

This edition is presented with a rigid box containing an Amaray case (that also includes a slipcover) to house the discs. The box also includes a 60-page Booklet and six art cards. The booklet includes character designs, information about the cast of characters and interviews with the author and staff about the anime’s second season.

The rigid box artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info card that wraps around the set from the bottom covers the information and specification like previous Funimation releases. The limited edition Blu-ray had an unspecified print run (likely to be 1000-2000 units) for an SRP of £59.99. A standard edition Blu-ray was also made available on the same date.

Some stock were still available and I ordered mine through retailer Rarewaves alongside a few other titles that are currently on offer via Crunchyroll UK’s Summer sale.
