Big Order (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Big Order (ビッグオーダー) is a 2016 television anime series based on Sakae Esuno’s manga series of the same name. The series was produced by studio Asread, and the staff credits include director Nobuharu Kamanaka, screenplay writer Katsuhiko Takayama, character designer Chika Kojima and music composer Evan Call. The season was first broadcast in Japan on April 2016.

Background:

“Ten years ago, Eiji Hoshimiya destroyed the world. Or close enough, anyway. Eiji is what they call an Order: someone whose wish, their innermost desire, has been given form. Money, immortality–whatever it might be, an Order has the power to make it real.

And the most terrifying part? Orders look like any normal human, with no way to tell one from the other. Yet, as the destroyer of the world, that’s how Eiji has managed to live since the disaster, alone but safe, and terrified to use his power again. But he might not have a choice when his class gets a new transfer student, one who has too keen an interest in a supposedly anti-social boy like him.”

After releasing The Future Diary, the author then decided to create another series that attracted the community for the wrong reasons. Big Order is apparently an absolute trainwreck to watch so I am curious to see how this turns out. I remember there was one scene that went viral because the main character managed to get a girl pregnant by just touching her for a second, it was weird. Incidently, the same studio that animated The Future Diary also animated Big Order so the author, studio and Kadokawa must have gotten along pretty well to make this adaptation happen.

But Crunchyroll decided it was popular enough to actually release it for the west on home video. Before Funimation & Crunchyroll partnered together, Big Order was actually one of the first titles announced with the intention of dubbing it for home video. Yet somehow, Big Order was never included in Funimation’s home video line-up and took a number of years to receive a release. Its eventual home video release came along because Discotek Media licensed a bunch of Crunchyroll & Kadokawa anime shows, which included this one.

It’s also thanks to Crunchyroll that Anime Limited was able to license and bring over to the UK & Ireland, and it is also uncut & uncensored.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Big Order managed to get a semi-barebones treatment likely due to lack of materials but at least it got enough to receive the collector’s treatment either way.

The package is presented as a rigid box with an Amaray Blu-ray case to house the disc and alongside the case is a 16-page booklet. The booklet features some artwork from the series.

The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray set is limited to 1000 units for SRP £59.99. A standard Blu-ray was also released a few months later.

The series was one of the anime titles made available for a discount during the Easter sale (£24.99).

Physical Contents:

  • Rigid Box with clean artwork and Amaray packaging
  • Info sheet for specification and BBFC description

On-Disc Contents:

The collector’s edition release for Big Order contains all 10 episodes and an OVA on a single Blu-ray disc, with the encode and authoring produced by MediaOCD & Discotek Media. As there was no English dub produced for the series, the only audio option available is Japanese with English subtitles.

The yellow subtitles are unlockable during playback, and the regions are locked to Blu-ray players set to B.

As mentioned, the set includes the OVA. The OVA was released with the manga volumes in Japan, before the television series aired. This is also an interactive anime, in which it will eventually randomises what scenes will show up and will keep going in an never-ending loop. It’s so complicated Discotek provided a guide for viewers when you get to it.
