Plunderer Parts 1 & 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Plunderer (プランダラ) is a 2020 television anime series based on Suu Minazuki’s manga series of the same name. It was produced by studio Geek Toys with director Hiroyuki Kanbe, writer Masashi Suzuki and music composed by Junichi Matsumoto. The series first broadcast in Japan on January 2020 as part of the Winter season.

Background:

“In the world of Alcia, everyone is marked with a count. High counts mean elevated status, but those with a count of zero suffer a fate worse than death. As Hina journeys to uncover the mystery behind the rule of numbers, she meets Licht Bach, a foolish philanderer with a count of -999.”

Plot Synopsis via Funimation UK, January 2022.

When I first started getting into anime, Funimation had a bunch of big harem anime shows that did pretty well in sales, titles like High School DxD, Rosario+Vampire, and Sekirei. Among those that had a lot of attention was Heaven’s Lost Property and while I own the first season I thought it was an okay series in general. Eventually that franchise pretty much got shafted on the anime front, and the author then moved on to a different series, which still retains its fanservice elements but is more of an action fantasy, called Plunderer.

Plunderer‘s concept is pretty cool, and the story goes into a very intriguing direction that I won’t spoil because it’s a surprise. However, saying that this unboxing post will spoil that surprise anyway due to the booklet contents and artwork. Plunderer basically starts off in one direction and then goes bonkers into another in a very ‘WTF’ manner. The show in general is rough on the adaptation front, but I liked it enough to consider acquiring the limited edition release. The home video version of the series did polish up some of the animation.

Funimation co-produced Plunderer and dubbed it during simulcast alongside another co-produced series ID: INVADED. Both did manage to make their way onto home video for the UK and US territories, though the UK suffered from numerous delays by various factors, but thankfully unlike BOFURI there was enough stock available to get it on the day of release.

Limited Edition Contents:

Similar to my unboxing for Dr. STONE, this post combines the limited edition Part 1 release with the regular edition Part 2 release. There was enough stock available for myself to get the UK versions of both sets than having to import the LE from the US due to Funimation’s inconsistency on stock and delays.

Getting that out of the way, this section will focus mostly on the Part 1’s limited edition package which Funimation have done a pretty decent job considering this is another one of their co-produced titles.

The limited edition box set features a rigid box that houses Part 1’s Amaray case and slipcase, with room to house Part 2 like the other limited edition sets for two-cour shows like this series. Also included in the box set is a 120-page booklet that provides tons of artwork and a manga section, 8 art cards, and 2 stickers. An Acrylic Diorama was advertised but is not included with my copy.

The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Funimation limited edition releases. The regular edition will still have the specification and info on the back cover for both the Amaray and slipcase.

The SRP for the limited edition set was £64.99 and the standard edition was £39.99. The price in the US was $84.98 so it’s not cheap to get, but considering it was brought over to the UK it’s not that bad if you manage to order through retailers like United Publications that offer a better deal than others. The unit count for these releases are not specified, and considering this was repeatedly delayed I’m expecting a lower unit count like BOFURI was treated.

Physical Contents (Part 2 Limited Edition):

  • Rigid Box with clean artwork and Amaray packaging with slipcase
  • Info sheet for specification
  • 120-page Art Book
  • 8 Art Cards
  • 2-sheet Acrylic Diorama (not with my set)
  • 2 Stickers
