Your Name (君の名は。, Kimi no Na wa.) is a 2016 original theatrical anime film by director and writer Makoto Shinkai, animated by studio CoMix Wave Films, and published by TOHO Animation. The film was theatrically released in Japan on August 2016.
Background:
“Mitsuha and Taki have never met, but when the frustrated country girl wishes of a life in the big city, they will forge a connection both unexplainable and unforgettable.
In their dreams, the two swap lives, cultures and genders as they learn more about, and grow closer to, each other. What was once a shock becomes a joy-filled double life, but what will happen when they discover the red string of fate tying them together?”
Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, June 2021.
Makoto Shinkai has made a lot of big anime films over the past 20 years, including the likes of Weathering With You, 5 Centimeters per Second and Garden of Words. Your Name is pretty much his most popular as it blew up in popularity throughout 2016 and 2017.
Anime Limited released the film with an English dub on Blu-ray back in November 2017 (and I acquired their deluxe edition box set which I have added to this blog last year, so I won’t repeat the whole quick background stuff here). But, in Japan, they released Your Name on the 4K Ultra HD format which was relatively new at the time.
4K anime is not as common as you would think, as very few are presented in that format plus barely any are actually animated natively in 4K resolution (Sol Levante from Production I.G on Netflix is pretty much the only native anime in 4K and that’s just a short). Any anime released in the past few years on the 4K format are pretty much upscales, though you can get 4K restoration projects as seen with Belladonna of Sadness, Cardcaptor Sakura, Millennium Actress, Project A-Ko (not directly confirmed to be restored in 4K, but Discotek did sample a clip in that format) and Tokyo Godfathers.
That being said, what makes the idea of watching 4K upscaled anime worth owning is the inclusion of High Dynamic Range, which Your Name does have and was said to be pretty good. While Funimation did release Your Name in North America, they haven’t bothered to bring the film onto 4K (and considering they forgot to include HDR on the Akira 4K release, maybe it’s best they don’t).
Anywho the point is, after a few years Anime Limited were finally able to acquire the additional rights to release Your Name in 4K Ultra HD and they partnered up with MediaOCD, the folks who authored the Millennium Actress 4K release, for this film’s UK re-release.
Collector’s Edition Contents:
The collector’s edition package for the 2021 re-release of Your Name is presented with a rigid box housing a digipack containing a 4K Ultra HD disc and Blu-ray disc as well as a 28-page booklet and 4 art cards. The booklet comes with illustrations, character artwork, and information about Makoto Shinkai’s original film proposal.
The artwork is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition 4K Ultra HD & Blu-ray combo pack has 1000 units printed for an SRP of £49.99. The film has already been released on Blu-ray so a standard edition is available, but there’s no plans for a standard 4K Ultra HD release as of the time of this post.
I pre-ordered the film via Anime Limited’s store during its early bird week for £34.99 plus the 10% store discount from Screen Anime (which is now replaced by the (Un)Limited membership).
As mentioned earlier, I own the film from their 2017 deluxe edition Blu-ray & DVD set which was pretty good in itself but the Blu-ray disc did have issues (blame Madman on that twice). The 4K Ultra HD release will be the best localised version for those who don’t want to import on the plus side.
Physical Contents:
- Rigid Box with digipack packaging and clean artwork
- Info sheet for specification and BBFC description
- 28-page Booklet
- 4 Art Cards
On-Disc Contents:
Distributor: Anime Limited
Released: 21st June 2021
The collector’s edition release for Your Name contains the film on a single 4K Ultra HD disc and a single Blu-ray disc. The encoding and authoring for the 4K Ultra HD were handled by MediaOCD, while the Blu-ray uses the 2017 re-authored version from Madman.
On the 4K Ultra HD disc, the audio options available include Japanese with English & French subtitles, the NYAV Post English dub commissioned by Anime Limited and the Soundtastic French dub commissioned by @Anime. The white subtitles are unlockable during playback and the disc is all region.
On the Blu-ray disc, the audio options available include Japanese with English subtitles and the NYAV Post English dub commissioned by Anime Limited. The white subtitles are unlockable during playback and the disc is region restricted to B for Blu-ray players.
The Blu-ray disc is the exact same as the second print version of the previous release, with none of the bad video quality issues Madman did though it still has a few frame issues that never got amended. Either way the whole point of this release is for the 4K disc rather than the Blu-ray disc.
