KOKKOKU: Moment by Moment (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

KOKKOKU: Moment by Moment (刻刻) is a 2018 television anime series based on the manga of the same name written by Seita Horie. It was adapted by Geno Studio and directed by Yoshimitsu Oohashi. Twin Engine published the series and was first broadcast in Japan on January 2018 as part of the Winter season.

Background:

“It’s 6:59 forever…

The members of the Yukawa family have inherited the Stasis Spell, the power to stop time. When they use their power, they enter Stasis, a world where everything has stopped. One day, Juri’s nephew and brother get kidnapped.

Trying to rescue them, their grandfather uses the Stasis Spell, but they are suddenly attacked by others who are also able to move in Stasis. It’s not a race against time, it’s a race outside of time and the dangers are increasing with every non-second in KOKKOKU.”

Now this is an interesting one to talk about. KOKKOKU was one of the small batch of titles that was actually streaming exclusively through Amazon Prime across all territories the service was accessible at. It’s also not part of either the NoitaminA block or the Animeism block, but rather unofficially a partnership between Amazon and producer Twin Engine. Twin Engine were also responsible for Babylon, Dororo, Karakuri Circus and Vinland Saga (and according to one region, Psycho-Pass 3 also but I found no concrete evidence on that part).

KOKKOKU overall is a decent anime to check out. Its concept is great but the story overall feels more like an anime arc that got stretched out so there’s a lot of missed potential. That being said I did like the characters and the opening theme song introduced me to MIYAVI’s neat music (he also did music for ID: INVADED and the live-action Blade of the Immortal). If you’re a hardcore anime fan, you may also recognise the anime’s characters were designed by Yasuomi Umetsu who is also responsible for Kite and Mezzo.

While being exclusive to Amazon, many were thinking KOKKOKU was doomed to ever see a home video release. Well that ended up being the opposite, as Sentai was able to acquire the United States & Canada rights at a decent timeframe. Anime Limited also picked up the United Kingdom & Ireland rights with their usual collector’s package to go alongside it.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited loves providing collector’s edition releases for their catalogue and KOKKOKU shares the same treatment.

As there was limited amount of resources, likely due to licensing, the presentation is more akin to the older designs of the distributor’s releases. The spine matches the likes of Samurai Flamenco while the rest is similar to the current setup. There isn’t that much in terms of physical items but it’s better than nothing.

With the exception of the spine which displays Anime Limited’s infamous logo and the Collector’s Edition banner, the rest of the design is free of any information or BBFC content and the info sheet covers the information and specification like previous Anime Limited releases. The collector’s edition Blu-ray has 1000 units printed for an SRP of £59.99. This is also a Blu-ray only release but a standard edition is expected to follow once the collector’s sells out.

I should note that this set was included in the 2020 Mystery Box bundle from Anime Limited’s 12 Days of Christmas sale and I acquired the set via other means to secure a copy. Thankfully I found one at the price I was happy to spend (which is what I would have spent if it were on sale). I don’t know if the set is on the verge of being out of print but at the time of this post it may last another couple more months to the next year if you want to risk it.
