Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (青春ブタ野郎はバニーガール先輩の夢を見ない, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai) is a 2018 television anime series based on the light novel written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Keiji Mizoguchi. The anime was adapted by studio CloverWorks and published by Aniplex. The series aired during the Autumn 2018 anime season in October.
Background:
“Puberty syndrome – Abnormal experiences rumored on the internet to be caused by sensitivity and instability during adolescence.
This year, Sakuta Azuagawa, a second-year student at a high school near Enoshima, meets several girls that are experiencing this “puberty syndrome.”
For instance, he encounters a wild bunny girl in the library. She turns out to be an actress on hiatus, Mai Sakurajima, who is also his senior at the school. For some reason, no one else can see this enchanting girl. How did she become invisible…? As Sakuta searches for answers to help Mai, they spend more time together, and he eventually learns of her hidden feelings…
This is an unusual story that takes place in a town of bright skies and glistening seas, where Sakuta encounters various intriguing girls.”
Plot Synopsis via MVM Entertainment, May 2020
To me, Rascal Bunny Girl Senpai (as I like to call it) went under the radar despite being written by the same author of The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (which is well-loved by folks though its ending was controversial). But I did eventually watch it after it had finished airing and it was pretty good, definitely one of the more interesting anime to be released in 2018.
Rascal Bunny Girl Senpai was acquired by Aniplex and that means Aniplex of America handled the English rights for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand territories. Madman was able to release the series on Blu-ray in Australia and New Zealand while MVM Entertainment did the same for the United Kingdom and Ireland. In what I find to be a usually rare occurrence, the special edition releases for the UK & Australia are almost identical to the Aniplex of America release.
Limited Edition Contents:
MVM Entertainment’s release is a replica of the Madman take on the Aniplex product. The sole difference is that MVM likes to offer rigid boxes rather than cardboard and works out pretty well in the final product. Aniplex also has been utilising the back cover of the main box for information like plot details and specs, and therefore both MVM and Madman did the same. In a sense it looks the same as the Aniplex release, which is a plus considering how pricey the Aniplex sets can be.
Included in the collector’s edition is a booklet and a couple of art cards. Both of these are the same as the Aniplex release also. Anime Limited have been able to replicate the booklets in the past so it was no surprise that Madman and MVM could do the same. The Blu-ray case also shares the same artwork as the Aniplex set and while Madman used 2 Blu-ray discs instead of 3, the characters featured in the disc art are all presented across both discs so no one is left out.
The collector’s edition release retailed for SRP £69.99 and was available for roughly 1000 units. A standard edition Blu-ray followed a few months later. I received my copy as part of my Birthday haul.
