Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory & Afterglow of Zeon (Collector’s Edition Blu-ray) Unboxing

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (機動戦士ガンダム0083 STARDUST MEMORY, Kidō Senshi Gandamu Daburuōeitīsrī Sutādasuto Memorī) is a 1991 original video anime series from studio Sunrise and directed by Mitsuko Kase and Takashi Imanishi. The series was released at one episode per volume in Japan starting May 1991 until eventually wrapping up at its 13th episode in September 1992.

Background:

“Universal Century 0083.

Having triumphed in the One-Year War, the Earth Federation has grown complacent, while the last remnants of Zeon forces have been planning one final stand. It all hinges on ace Zeon pilot Anavel Gato stealing one of the new prototype Gundams out from under the Federation’s nose.

With a nuclear-equipped Gundam missing and their pride wounded, the Federation ship Albion and rookie pilot Kou Uraki set out in pursuit of the Zeon thieves and the stolen Gundam GP02A.”

Plot Synopsis via Anime Limited, May 2020

Gundam 0083 takes place in the Universal Century timeline in-between the original Mobile Suit Gundam series and its sequel Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, however it does not have any involvement with the characters in that series outside of the setting, the factions; Federation vs Zeon, and references that tie the events together.

Throughout 2019, Anime Limited held a celebration of Gundam event that covered Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower, Mobile Suit Gundam Char’s Counterattack and Mobile Suit Gundam Gundam Origin V-VI, but this is the first time that a different Gundam had been mentioned since. Though they did announce plans for Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans not long after so there’s still plenty more Gundam incoming for the UK. Rightstuf and Nozomi are pretty much up-to-date outside of a few titles.

At the beginning of this post, I mentioned both a new appearance and returning one for a reason. The first is that Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory had not been released in the UK via its OVA series form before, and the second is that instead of the OVA series came the movie compilation Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Afterglow of Zeon which Beez Entertainment had released on DVD. The Anime Limited UK release will include both the OVA series and the film version while the French release will only have the film.

Collector’s Edition Contents:

Anime Limited have consistency (or almost if you have to nitpick) presented their Gundam Collection so that each series or film from the franchise comes with a rigid box, Amaray case and a couple of physical items.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 is packaged using the slim-style model that the films have taken as everything is packed within a single Amaray case rather than multiple (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is also the same case). Included with the set is a couple of art cards and a fold-out poster.

The SRP for this release is £59.99 and has the usual 1000 units which is available across all retailers.

Physical Contents:

  • Rigid Box with Clean artwork, Title on Spine, Info on Paper Sheet
  • 5 Art Cards
  • 34 x 40cm fold-out poster

On-Disc Contents:

Released: 4th May 2020

The collector’s edition release for Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 from Anime Limited contains both Stardust Memory‘s 13 OVA episodes as well as the theatrical film Afterglow of Zeon across 3 Blu-ray discs, using the Nozomi & Rightstuf master this time around. Note that due to how the series was made, this show is in 4:3 aspect ratio and not widescreen.

The audio options included are the main Japanese audio with English subtitles for the whole package as well as the Bandai Entertainment English dub for the Stardust Memory series. Afterglow of Zeon was never dubbed and as such remains subtitled only. The discs are region locked to B and the subtitles are unlockable during playback.
