Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2 (Limited Edition Blu-ray & DVD) Unboxing

Attack on Titan (進撃の巨人, Shingeki no Kyojin) Season 3 is a 2018-2019 television anime series based on Hajime Isayama’s manga series of the same name. The series was adapted by WIT Studio, and the staff credits include director Masashi Koizuka with chief director Tetsuro Araki, series composition writer Yasuko Kobayashi, character designer Kyoji Asano, and music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano. The season first aired in Japan on July 2018 with its second cour airing in April 2019, distributed by Kodansha.

This is the second part of the third season of Attack on Titan, so any images and details mentioned below will be considered as major spoilers for those who have yet to watch or read any of the story aspects covered in Seasons 1 to 3.

Note: This post has been updated in May 2024 to reflect the current blog layout and some minor tweaks to the original write-up.

Background:

“The long-awaited return to Shiganshinahas come. Once again, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin face the Titans in their hometown where the secrets of the Jaeger family cellar lie in wait. On this do-or-die mission to take back Wall Maria, the Scouts quickly learn that Reiner and Bertholdtare the least of their worries.”

Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment, March 2020.

As mentioned before, Attack on Titan is rather popular with both anime fans and those who do not watch anime in general. Over-time due to the lack of new anime content, the hype has toned down but with the recent seasons in the past few years plus a final season scheduled for later into 2020, the hype is slowly coming back, despite the controversies that the story takes which has divided the fanbase.

Now the third season of Attack on Titan was split into two parts; the first part takes place after the events of the second season and was adapted differently compared to the source material by the manga author’s request. The second part follows the material much more accurately and is actually done in 10 episodes rather than the usual 12-13 in previous seasons. This second part also wraps up the main situation of the manga’s storyline in terms of the protagonists discovering the truth of the world and also brings back the fight against the titans in contrast to the first half which followed a more human vs human approach.

Funimation has the rights to the anime franchise for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland. They have streamed the series on their service Funimation Now, offered an English dub through Toonami, and also brought it out on Blu-ray. As mentioned with my unboxing for the previous seasons, Attack on Titan has not had a good time with the UK & Ireland, but Season 3 was handled pretty well thanks to Manga Entertainment essentially replicating the Funimation assets without any alterations.

Note: This blog post will contain photos that feature massive spoilers for the events of the third season. Just a heads up!

The series was purchased from UK retailer Anime-on-Line during pre-order to make sure I had a copy due to Manga’s stock being inconsistent for availability.
