DJMAX RESPECT is a South Korean music rhythm game developed by Rocky Studio and Neowiz MUCA released in 2017 across Asian territories followed by the west in 2018.
Background:
DJMAX RESPECT is the latest instalment in a long-running franchise, that has received many releases in Asia with a few that arrived in the west. This game is considered a reboot of sorts, with a number of tracks from previous releases returning as part of both the main setlist and also as downloadable content.
The gameplay for DJMAX RESPECT focuses on a number of notes from the top of the screen falling to the bottom and you have to press the correct button from the column it’s under to score points. The more notes you press, the more points you earn and eventually reach a max combo if you can get all of them. Like Taiko (and unlike Guitar Hero) you only need to use the PlayStation controller to play the game so there’s no need to pay more to get the right setup.
There are also multiple difficulties and gameplay options available. You can start the game using:
- 4 buttons (◄, ▲, Triangle, and Circle)
- 5 buttons (◄, ▲, Square and ► as one button, Triangle and Circle)
- 6 buttons (◄, ▲, ►, Square, Triangle, and Circle)
- 8 buttons (◄, ▲, ►, Square, Triangle, Circle, L1 and R1)
Once you chose your button configuration, the song can be played in either Normal, Hard or Maximum difficulty.
DJMAX RESPECT features 147 songs on the base disc. Around 107 of these songs are from DJMax Portable and DJMax Portable 2, while 40 of them are brand new to the series. Like Rock Band, DJMAX RESPECT will provide downloadable content for songs that were included in the previous instalments, like DJMax Technika, DJMax Trilogy, and DJMAX Ray.
The question many will ask is whether this game is import friendly, well I’m happy to confirm that the entire game will be playable in English no matter which version you acquire. The game was first released in South Korea with English support, and so even the Japanese release has the same outcome.
I imported the Japanese version to avoid the hurdle of creating another PSN account when accessing the downloadable content as I already have a Japanese one. The game has been released in the west as a digital download release on PlayStation 4, with an updated version also available for PC owners.
